Sounds like a rack and pinion problem. But first check your power steering fluid levels and make sure there's no obstruction in the path of the wheel.

GM steering racks are notoriously bad after a few years. For a quick cheap fix buy a bottle of Lucas power steering rack repair. It was originally designed for GM problems back in the early '80's but works on all P/S cars. I am a car dealer and used it dozens of times with 100% good results. Its very thick so if you live in cold climate, as I do, warm it in a pan of warm/hot water 10 or 15 min before you try to pour it in your P/S resevoir. Cost @ $10 - $12 for a small bottle.

It sounds like you have switched pipes somewhere. Check your plumbing, otherwise is it possible that you have inserted the rack in upside-down?

I have a 1992 Oldsmobile 98 the car and everything runs fine I stopped my car to get gas and now when I try to turn the key it wont even turn in the ignition how do i make it turn to fire the car up

Try giving the steering wheel a wriggle left and right as you turn the wheel. Sometimes the steering lock pin has to much force on it to move easily.
Other than that the gears on the starter rod may have jumped or warn and will not mesh. That would require the steering wheel to be removed to fix.

Key wont turn

try turning the steering wheel hard over left or right (both) while trying to turn the key with the normal amount of force. (never force the key)
most likely, it is just the steering wheel lock stopping the key from rolling forward.

Key goes into ignition but will not turn, car is in park and steering wheel is locked. How can I get the ignition to turn?

while you SLIGHTLY turn the steering wheel, try to turn the key-do not force the key, you do not want to break it.

Locked up Steering Wheel

Your Wheels may not be straight which could cause the steering wheel lock to get stuck. Turn the steering wheel left and right, from one stop to the other, watching how far the wheel travels. Now, turn the wheel to the center of the travel distance and turn the key. If this doesn't free it up, turn the key as you turn the steering wheel left then right to get the lock to release the wheel. Hope this helps and please rate my solution - and thanks for using Fixya!!

How do you get a stearing colum unlock and the

hi if the problem is that the lock has locked and wont free when you try and turn the ignition on then what you should try is turning the steering wheel from left to right as hard as you can whilst you try turning the key, the problem is usually that the lock is under pressure from the tyres trying to turn the steering wheel so with this pressure on the lock the key just wont turn so you need to try and release this pressure so that the key will turn and unlock the lock.

so hold the steering wheel tight and turn it left using a bit of pressure whilst you keep trying to turn the key dont hold the key in the same possition as this wont free the lock keep turning the key on and off so that it resets and this should then allow the lock to free and you should be able to start your car, if turning the steering wheel left dont work then try right and repeat with the key on and off until the lock is off and the steering is free.

now it is going to be tight so you will need some force to turn the steering wheel as the force from the tyres will be quite alot so you will need to use force to work the steering wheel left and right whilst turning the key.

now if this still dont work then this will either mean you have a problem with the key or the actual ignition barrel has got a fault if this is the case then your going to need to get a new igniton barrel, the part the key goes into before the lock will free itself, all you need to do to remove the barrel is to remove the cover from the steering wheel surround and then you will see how the barrel comes out of its surround but dont do this until you have a new lock in case you forget how you got it apart.

the chances are the lock is just stuck and working the steering wheel left then right as far as you can will free it up if it dont then you can also try jacking the 2 front wheels off the floor like put the car on stands then try turning the steering left and right to unlock the ignition doing it this way releases the pressure from the tyres and should make it easier to unlock the steering.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Key In Ignition Won't Move 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

The steering column sounds locked. Try turning the steering wheel all the way left or right till you hear it unlock or until the key can turn. Note; You must use force to unlock the steering column and don't be scared because it won't break anything.
