My power steering pump makes a lot of noise early in the morning, especially when it's cold outside. and after it runs for awhile or warm up after a couple of miles, it quietens down. Still works good other than that.

The noise you are hearing is very common, and the fix is easy and cheap. There is a return inlet o-ring on the pump #91345-RDA-A01 that costs less than a dollar, that is letting air get sucked into the system and causing a whine, until it warms up and seals itself. Some Hondas have a recall for this, check if yours does. I also recommend replacing the return hose from the reservoir to the pump at the same time, once it is disturbed, it can cause the same problem. 53731-S9V-A00 $5.28. Get a bottle of Honda power steering fluid at the same time, only use genuine Honda fluid.

Just like Larry said. It's old and tired. It will work for a while. But price one out, price the tools to replace it. You bring it to where I work and the cost will be $400+.

Just getting old. Replacing it is the safest thing to do. Personally I would not worry until it leaked or got worse, but that is me. Replacement is always the safest thing to do.

Power steering pump is making a lot of noise, especially in the morning when it's cold outside.

It is the pump itself making the noise, or is it the drive belt slipping on the pulley? Sometimes the belt just need tightened, or replaced if it is glazed.

Cars steering wheel hard turn

I hope you are using the right PS fluid for your vehicle! Have you checked that?

Power steering systems are tricky. Whenever you add fluid, you should (with the engine running and PS pump turning), turn the wheels ALL the way, both left and right while creeping as slow as a snail on an open parking lot ... at least twice (like R-I-G-H-T, then L-E-F-T, then R-I-G-H-T, then L-E-F-T)! Then re-check the PS fluid level again, and if still low, repeat the whole process! DON'T turn the steering wheel too fast!

My '06 Honda Odyssey has gotten noisy recently.

If it is filled up to the "full hot" mark then you are okay, fluid wise. It almost sounds like once it gets warmed up, it starts running better. The "growling" noise (especially when turning) could be from it not getting enough fluid. Other than that, your power steering pump maybe on its last legs, and it is taking time to warm up before it starts pumping fluid correctly. Just make sure that you power steering resevoir is completely filled to the proper mark.

First you need to find the source that is causing noise. On cold weather is very normal engine belts or belts idle pulley bearings or belt tension-er to make noise, especially when they are old. Also power steering pump too especially if the oil is very old.

When is really cold, and vehicles with non electrical power steering start for the first time after a good period of inactivity the power steering pump tents to wine, that is normal, some other cars or almost all the cars when they pass 100.000 miles develop a little metallic noise that goes away when the oil pump distributes and lubricates all moving parts inside the engine when the car starts first thing in the morning in a really cold morning.

I had this same problem and the dealer could not reproduce the noise when I would take it in to get looked at. (during the day when the temperature was warm) So I decided to leave it over night and they test drove it in the morning when the temperature was cold and they heard the noise. It ended up bing the steering rack.

1995 Olds Achieva S Grinding upon starting

They make that kind of noise if its low on fluid, and also depending on how cold it is they will make a lot of noise because the colder it is the thicker the oil is and the harder it is to pump. I am not there to hear the starter, If the starter is making noise it will only be audiable while your on start, i dought starter will make that noise while its running unless the drive is sticking . Have both the pump and starter chk.out.
