The really olny way PCV valves go bad is if they clog. PCV means positive crankcase ventalation.
What happens if they clog is oil pressure will build to high causeing oil seals and gaskets in the engine to start to leak .
Once this starts you really can't fix it with out replaceing them .
It will also tend to push engine oil into the fuel / air intake system causeing problems air intake idle fuel injuction spark plugs carberation MAP EGR CAT systems
In short just change it when the oil is done 2 or 3 dollars
Rough idle mostly. If you have other vacuum leaks with it, the engine will sometimes die at idle. If you shake it and it makes noise, it is still good. Clean it up with some bake clean or carb cleaner.
