How many miles do you have on the Olds? Many people assume just changing the pads on the high miles car and not having the rotors turn its not good idea. Don't get me wrong, it will work and do what its suppose to although if its was me I would have it done. If you were able to replace your pads then you should also be able to take the rotors off. It doesn't cost much to have the rotor turn and its worth having it done knowing that would cured your squealing or grinding problems and also it will make your brake pad last allot longer better stoping and reduce any vibration as long as your rotors is not warp. Since you still feel and hear the brake still grinding it does not sound right. What type of pad did you installed? I hope you did not installed a pad call "life time guaranteed" which its simi metallic pad and it will grind your rotors down to nothing. I called it steel pad and that is what is made off. What you need to do is get the car going at the high speed like 65 mph on the back road some where and apply heavy breaking come to a complete stop, NOTE: unless you have ABS "Do Not Lock the Brakes Up". do this couple of times this will break the pads in and that should solved some of your problems. If you getting smoke comming out from your pad its fine..

I AM EXPERIENCING PROBLEM WITH MY 2001 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHENEVER I STEP ON THE BRAKE IT PULSATES AND VIBRATES AND THE BRAKE PUSHES MY FOOT BACK. I KNOW CARS WITH ABS DO THIS BUT MINE IS JUST TOO...

ok have ever had the breakes changed before or is there any squeling or grinding thats your brake pads are bad. as far as the whole brake system being replace thats ********* that mechanic is looking for a big bonus. im leaning towards a stuck or sticking calipar would cause it as well as if there is are in the system and will need to be bleed out. no if the roter's are warped u will know it cause the whole front end will shake when step on the brakes but only when u use the brakes. if you can see the brake roter's run your finger tip accros them they should be smooth with no groves or rigges if they have them the pads are bad as well as the roters and will need to be replaced, and a abs secner would kick in the abs. all in all i would take it to a shop u trust.

Loud grinding in front driverside brake when applied, the pads are only half worn and I can't feel any significant grooves in the roter

do u only hear the noise when braking? those vans r prone to wheel bearing failure. the noise will always be there and will get loude with speed. the other thing it could be is the backing plate behind the rotor. all u have to do is gently push/pull it away from the rotor.generally if the wheel bearing has failed and the van has ABS the abs warning lamp will come on from time to time the eventually stay lit permently.

My brakes make noise all the time

Pull the wheels(front first) check thicknes on brake pads. New pads have about 1/2"-5/8" of pad, if your's are around 1/4"-5/16" it's likely
the wear sensor is making the noise you hear. The sensor is a thin
piece of metal located on the end of the inside pad, it is designed to
rub the roter and make a squeeling sound to alert the driver that the
front brakes need service.
I will asume you have drum brakes on the rear, pull drum check the
shoes. Anything under 1/4" i would replace. It's always a good idea
to do both axels, unless one of them is new.
I don't know exactly what kind of sound you hear.If it's a grinding
not a squeaking, you may have waited to long, and it will be more
costly. The info. above will address the most common cause for your
problem, based on the info. you gave me. Hope this helps.
Good luck

A rubbing noise while turning and braking

this could be a strut bearing making this noise.

Noises

That noise is probably your brake pads rubbing the rotor(s). Time to get them replaced before rotors are ruined.
