Parking and dash lights turned on by themselves what could be the problem

Wife called me and told me lights were on, thought someone had got in it but doors were locked, light switch is off and no key in it. turn key on and lights go out. turn key back off and take it out and the lights come on again. I ended up pulling relay for parking lights to shut them off.. what could it be? ground maybe? bad ignition switch?

Sounds like you have a Light Delay System that is probably malfunctioning.
Do you have an "Auto" position on the Headlamp Switch?
If so, Turn it off and see if that helps
You can check your Owner's Manual to see if there is a section describing Auto Headlamps.
Also most newer vehicles have a battery saving feature built into the Body Computer - allowing the Body Computer control of the interior lamps and headlamps so it can shut them down in case the operator forgets - if so it is malfunctioning.
Let me know what you find out
Thanks

Does it have (or did have) an alarm system?

  • Patrick Miller Feb 27, 2015

Alarms will tie into the vehicle light system to flash while alarming. I am looking for some explaination of added on stuff. other wise it would have to be a headlamp switch or body computer

yes has alarm system (didnt know it ) just got this off my cousin and he said the alarm will do random stuff sometimes , so i am going to look into it this weekend

Cool - sounds likes a plan - disconnecting the old alarm shouldn't be too much of a problem. Find the module and follow the wires - just watch out for the 'Scotch Lok' connectors - they can actually cut the copper strands of the wire. Good luck with that and let me know how it goes :)

I have a 2001 malibu and the parking lights don't work. The dash lights up and the brake, hazard, and turn signals still work. Every time we try to turn the lights on the fuse blows and the relay is fine....

sounds like you have a short in the wiring somewhere. try checking all the wiring between the lights and the fuse box and between the fuse box and the switch looking for bare wires or loose ground connections. also check the bulbs themselves.

No park lights or dash lights

Park light, check the bulbs themselves buy checking the headlights and see if the bulbs are burned out. But both can very well be fuses...they are located under the hood on the driver's side near the wheel well, and under the dash nearest to the door also the driver's side.

Im told same fuse controls dash and tail lights just look in owners manual but i have no owners manual can someone please tell me what fuse is for das and tail lights on 2000 saturn sl please

It looks like the parking lamp fuse is in the box in the engine compartment marked PARK and the dash light fuse is in the box on the driver side of the dash marked DIMMER. They are two different circuits.

Gear shifter is in Park, but dash reads it's in Reverse. Car won't turn over because it is in Reverse now.

You have to locate where the park ignition switch is located. Some are on the transmission and some are in the column under the dash. It probably got moved.

Dash lights going haywire and engine tries to stall.

This sounds like a low voltage problem, so yes check the charging system first. At 1500 RPM with all the accessories turned on AC blower set to highest speed and headlights to high beam you should have at least 13.4 volts at the battery.

The door locks can be "Personalized" through the BCM (Body Control Module) The dealer can do this, or you may find it in your owners manual how to.

Won't turn over

The whirring sound may be coming from the starter. You can have it tested at Autozone to see whether or not the starter is operational. If it's not the starter, I would try to start the vehicle in another gear other than park or neutral. If it starts, you have a bad Neutral Safety Switch. If this part goes out, it can shut off the starting capabilities.

Parking light fuse

It should be fuse #36 (10 amp) in the box under dash. Its marked illum. lights. If it was blown and it blows again after you replace it you have a short somewhere in the circuit. P.S. your owners manual should give you fuse locations.

Not from the dealer, the part is called a combo switch, meaning it is a headlight switch and a wiper switch - one unit. I don't think is possible to take the switch apart without destroying it.
