SOURCE: 96 jeep Grand Cherokee tailgate will not open
This is kind of tricky. OK let's start, you have to crawl into the rear hatch area from the inside of the car. You'll have to pull the rear panel off the hatch, a screwdriver between the panel and hatch near the window will work. There might be 2 screws on the panel you could take out. The trick is to pull the panel far away enough to stick your arm down towards the latch and release it by hand. We did this at the dealer all the time.

I just had the same with mine, pull the rubber boot back on the drivers side front door and look for a severed wire, mine was black...simply spliced the wires back together and problem solved!

If you have the V8 engine, the filter is actually part of the fuel pump. WHICH IS IN THE TANK

First thing to check is for a broken wire or wires going from the door to inside the truck. Open the door all the way and you'll see a rubber sleeve inside of which are all the wires for all the electrical components inside the door. You can also check the relays which should be under the hood in the fuse and relay center. There are also fuses for the power accessories in the fusebox under the dash.
