Sounds as if the gears are grinding when in heavy traffic. Rides well if you acelerate from 0, but if moving at 5mph and you acelerate to catch up with the car in front, it sounds as if the gears are getting stuck and grinding (like a meat grinder). The car has 31K miles so we don't use it much, but it was used to launch a boat a few times. It was hosed off every time, but could it be that the salt got into the gears?

- Thanks thudergod, I will try to get a better assessment as to where the grinding is coming from. It feels as if it comes from the front, but the 4X4 is turned off - so I will get it up on the T stands and run it. I'll keep you posted.
Dave.
You first need to find out if the noise is coming from the rear differential, transfer case, transmission or elsewhere...You can't fix it if you don't know what is broken. Salt water can do a lot of damage, but it would gave to be fairly well submerged to get into anything easily.

was driving my 2002 ford explorer without any problems and then it just shut off, like it lost power. I pulled over, put it in park and attempted to start it, but would not even crank. Battery fine, alternator fine. Someone said it may be the PATS, but would that cause it to shut off while driving?
