What is the model and engine size? If you have the spider fuel system, start up fuel pressure is very important, usually around 60--66 psi. Once you get it started, it will run with less pressure.

SOURCE: How do you know if the fuel injector is bad or the

Hello there:
To be totally truthfull with you i would first have the fuel filter changed to ensure that the fuel pump can do its job properly than if you want to know if the injectors are working the vehical needs to be running then go to each injector and pull the wire from the injector if the engine starts to shake or make a totaqlly different sound than you know this injector is working HOWEVER if there is no change in the way the engine runs than you have a bad injector or the wiring going to that injector is faulty ok>
I dont think that you pump is bad they rarly will not run at all if they are bad they either work or do not work but you can always take the outlet side hose off and get a large container and to catch the fuel in than have sombody turn the key to the on position and see if you are getting good flow but if it looks weak and barly coming out than yes replace the pump ok?
Hope this is very helpful for you.
Best regards mike

fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator. When you turn the key do you hear fuel pump run? If not odds are the pump is bad.

If the 8th letter of the VIN # is W which i bet it is than your fuel pressure is to low.

This engine uses a CPI unit to deliver fuel to the cylinders. The CPI unit consists of a central injector that feeds fuel to the poppet valve that are right above the intake valves. The poppet valves require high fuel pressure in order to open and deliver fuel to the cylinders at start up.

The reason why it starts and runs if you add a little gas through the throttle body is that once the vehicle is running the intake is under vacuum. The poppets can open with less fuel pressure in a vacuum. This is a real common scenario with these style injection systems.

A new good quality fuel pump (a/c delco or delphi are good pumps) and your fuel pressure should be back into spec of 58 psi or more and the vehicle should fire right up. Make sure you replace the fuel filter when you replace the pump.

97 chevy silverado will not start unless i pour gas in throttle body

Sounds like a failed fuel pump in the tank. Try listening at the opened fuel filler and have assistant turn ignition on without cranking. Should hear buzzing or whirring for a very brief (2 sec.) time. If not... also check connectors and fuses. Could try banging on bottom of tank while assistant cranks over, sometimes will make it work for a while.

Cranks well but won't start.

Looks like you got spark, and gas in the throttle body made it fire: nice work.
Sounds like your fuel pump is out or the wiring is not turning it on. One way to be sure is to set a spare battery near the tank and hot wire the pump with jumper wires. Or if you have a voltmeter check for voltage at the fuel pump connector while the truck is cranking.. If the pump is working and getting gas to the engine, see if the injectors are pulsing. A good idea to check fuel pressure if the pump is working.

if you can put fuel in throttle body and it runs. then it is not getting any fuel. check your fuel pump fuse and the relay, if ok, then you may have a bad fuel pump or a plugged up fuel filter. check filter and fuses first. good-day !!

when you first turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump run for about 10 seconds . this primes the fuel system .If you do not hear the pump run then you need to check the circuits for the pump
the fuel pump has a fuse and a relay that is use to power up the pump . you should check the fuse and if they are ok then switch the fuel pump relay with a like one in the fuse box (horn relay is the same as the fuel pump relay ) I think the fuse and the relay are both in the under hood fuse box on your truck . If these all check out ok then you need to check for power and ground at the fuel pump connector . if this checks out all good then replace the fuel pump . some times if you think the pump is not working you can bang on the gas tank with a rubber mallet this may move the pump winding off of the dead spot and the truck will start ... but this is not a fix .. just a way to get it started to move it or take it to a shop

Best to do the fuel pressure test, chanses are it needs a fuel pump. Just because you can hear the pump run dosent mean its working or at least putting out enought pressure to make it run.
