The heavy smoke is from all the fuel dumping in to the cylinders without enough heat. Can you plug the car in at might if not glow the plugs sevral times befor turning the engine over.key on few sec then off then on several times. Hope this atleast helps your cold start problem.

I have a 04 renault traffic van 1.9 dci i have recently had new turbo fitted and glow plugs, but glow light still goes out after 1 second and thats in the morning when i go to start her i also have had...

sounds like a bad sensor. the glow plugs should stay on long enough to reach a certain temperature, especially when it's cold. So turning off after 1 second is not nearly enough. There may be a problem with sensing the temperature of the glow plugs.

Glow plugs ford escort diesal 1.8

Since you're running diesel, you might need an engine block heater. Even the largest vehicles need to keep the block warm when the winter temperatures drop. It keeps the engine oil & fuel looser.
