I have a Merc c220 cdi 2001 and kickdown works only occasionally. The max speed I can get is 85 mph, although this is not a problem in my commute. The revs won't exceed much more than 2500 in any gear even when I change down gear manually which I am resorting to to get a bit of overtaking power. MAF sensor ? Thanks.

Does it have a check engine light? You need to have it scanned and yes it could be a mass air sensor, dirty fuel filters and air filters can cause this too.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the reply,I have no dashboard fault lights or error/malfunction messages showing. Will check out the sensor and poss clean/leave discon/replace it. Thanks again, Ray."

I have a Merc c220 cdi 2001.The kickdown works only sometimes and then only once per journey. It will not travel above 85 mph (not that this is a problem).Manually shifting the auto into lower gears works...

Hi Ray
This is an unusual problem the gearbox change is controlled electronically so normally the first thing to do is get the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic machine ( this would also normally require a proper mercedes start diagnostic and not a cheap one at the local garage) But assuming it is electronic you have 2 choices the gearbox control module located in the car just below the gear change lever and the main electronic control located in the oil pan of the gearbox not so easy to access, Just a thought have you ever spilt a beverage such as coffee or soda over the gear lever area ?
as I have seen this problem before with a lack of gear selection it had shorted the module, So I guess for the cheapest first stop I would locate a second hand module from the breakers yard and try this first it should be a easy DIY anything more will require some proper mechanical skills hope this is of some help, Just a last minute thought have you checked underneath for a transmission oil leak as the oil may just be low this model suffers with the "O" ring around the electronic plug failing and causing a leak its located on the right hand side of the box just above the oil pan at the front edge.

What does * LIMIT 4 MPH* message means on BMW X5 2001

It sounds like you inadvertently set the speed warning (you can set it in the OBD to warn you if you go over a certain speed). If the car has nav, look under the "settings", second page, and turn it off or set it to something like 85. If you don't have nav, I'm not sure where the setting is but look for "speed warning" in the manual. Hope that helps.
