Acura Coupes and Sedans 1986-1993 Repair Guide
Fuel Filter

Print
The recommended change interval for the fuel filter on all models is 60,000 miles under normal service. Severe service will require more frequent changing of the fuel filter.
The filter is located in the passengers side of the engine compartment.

CAUTION Before disconnecting any fuel lines, be sure to open the gas tank filler cap to relieve any pressure in the system and wrap a shop towel around the fuel line fitting before opening. Observe all fuel handling precautions.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Wrap a shop towel around the fittings and using a proper wrench, slowly loosen the fuel line fittings.
  3. Remove the 2 banjo bolts from the fuel lines.
  4. Remove the fuel filter clamp retaining bolt and the clamp.
  5. Remove the filter from the vehicle.

It is very important that ALL of the fuel line banjo bolt washers be replaced every time the banjo bolts are loosened. If the washers are not replaced the fuel lines will leak pressurized fuel causing the risk of fire or explosion.
  1. Install the new filter in position and tighten the clamp mounting bolt to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2. Attach the banjo fittings with new washers in place. On Legend and Vigor, tighten the fuel line flare connector to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm). On the remaining models, tighten the banjo fitting bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  3. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.

Inline fuel filter replacement

First off you will need to go to a local parts store and get the filter clamp release tool. Then locate the fuel filter under left (drivers) side of the car usually on the frame rail between the fuel tank and drivers door. Remove small locking clips from the filter clamps. Next and use caution and eye protection as fuel line will likely still have some presure. slide clamp release tool into open (filter) side when you get it in position push fuel line and filter together set clamp release tool tight by pushing it toward fuel line then pull on fuel line it should slip right off. Repeat for the fuel line on the other side of the filter. To reinstall simply look for the arrow on the filter and with itr pointing toward the engine push fuel line clamps back onto fuel filter. Replace safety locks turn ing. on and off about 5 times then crank the engine to start.

WHERE IS THE FUEL FILTER ON A 88 NISSAN PATHFINDER

Fuel Filter REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
NEVER SMOKE WHEN WORKING AROUND OR NEAR GASOLINE! MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO ACTIVE IGNITION SOURCE NEAR YOUR WORK AREA! 1970-83 Carbureted Engines The fuel filter is located on the right inner fender in the engine compartment. It is a disposable cartridge type.
  1. Using a pair of pliers, expand the hose clamp on one side of the filter, and slide the clamp further down the hose, past the point to which the filter pipe extends. Remove the other clamp in the same manner.
  2. Grasp the hoses near the ends and twist them gently to pull them free from the filter pipes.
  3. Pull the filter from the clip and discard.
  4. Install the new filter into the clip. Push the hoses onto the filter pipes, and slide the clamps back into position. Start the engine and check for leaks. Fig. 1: Fuel filter - 1970-79 85851035.gif
    Fig. 2: Fuel filter - 1980-83 85851036.gif
1984-86 Carbureted Engines The fuel filter is located on the inside of the frame above the left rear spring front shackle. Changing the filter is VERY awkward. Since it is in-line and below tank level, fuel will pour from the fuel lines when they are disconnected from the filter. The only way of preventing this, is to siphon all of the gasoline from the tank before replacing the filter. Another possible method is to clamp and plug the fuel line, but this is not recommended because of the danger of leaking fuel or damage which could occur to the fuel line when clamped. It would, therefore, be a good idea to run the tank almost dry before changing the filter. Once the tank is dry, disconnect the fuel lines at the filter, unbolt the old filter and install a new one. Reconnect the fuel lines, fill the tank, start the engine and check for leaks. Fig. 3: Fuel filter - 1984-86 85851037.gif

Fuel Injected Engines WARNING
Never attempt to remove the fuel filter without first relieving the fuel system pressure!
  1. Release the fuel pressure from the fuel line as follows:
    1. Remove the fuel pump fuse at the fuse box.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. After the engine stalls, crank the engine two or three times to make sure that the fuel pressure is released.
    4. Turn the ignition switch OFF and reinstall the fuel pump fuse.
  2. Loosen the hose clamps at the fuel inlet and outlet lines then slide each line off the filter nipples.
  3. Remove the fuel filter.
  4. Replace the fuel filter. Always be sure to use new hose clamps. Fig. 7: Fuel filter - 1986-88 VG30i 85851038.gif

Basic service

Here are detailed instructions on the location, removal, and re-installation of your fuel filter. Hope it helps and have a great day!

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Carbureted Engines
These vehicles use two replaceable fuel filters. A small one is in the fuel line under the hood; a larger one is located at the rear, just inboard of the left rear wheel.
Whenever the filter(s) are replaced, take great care to avoid the entry of dirt into the lines. Also, pay attention to the correct installation position. It is possible to install the filter backwards.
FRONT
See Figure 2
  1. If applicable, disengage the filter or hose from its retaining clip.
  2. Using two fuel line clamps, pinch off both fuel lines. Take care not to crush the lines; just clamp them shut.
If the fuel hoses are hard or cracked, it is necessary to replace them.

Fuel Injected Engines
See Figures 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12
The canister fuel filter is located in the engine compartment. When buying the new filter, also buy new washers for the banjo bolts and the service bolt. Failure to replace these washers invites high-pressure fuel leaks. Replacing the washers is required, not recommended.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. The fuel system is under pressure. Release pressure slowly and contain spillage. Observe "no smoking/no open flame" precautions. Have a Class B-C (dry powder) fire extinguisher within arm's reach at all times.
  3. Disconnect the banjo bolts and/or threaded fuel line fitting from the fuel filter. Use of a flare nut or line wrench is recommended for disconnecting and attaching this fitting.
