This is not good, could be a fuel leak [ fuel rail, gas line etc] which could result in a fire.. Also could be the canister for the gas tank venting system..either way you need to get it to a garage asap

Check all gas lines from your gas tank to the carburetor and see if there are damp spots and if you see any damp spots take your finger and wipe the damp spot and smell. If it smells like gas there probably is a slight leak. even a moist spot of gas will smell big time.
Check all around your gas tank as well. A question i have do you have a clean air filter. If not it might be choking itself to *****.
Well it could be something the previous owner spilled in the vents, or sprayed into the vents to try to cover up a moldy smell. You might try a detail shop to get rid of the smell.
You have a gas leak somewhere of the tank vent system is leaking or blocked. You need to follow the fuel pipes and vent pipes to find the problem. Some Nissans did have problems with their vent systems, but whatever you do proceed with caution and watch what light source you use.
If you're smelling gas through your vents, you surely have a gas leak in your engine compartment. It could be as simple as a leaky fuel line to something more complicated as a leaking fuel injector seal. Have it looked at ASAP or you may run the risk of having an engine compartment fire, destroying the car.
Sounds like a bad fuel pump, check if the smell comes under the rear wheels and also check for a loud humming noise when the key is turned to on. Those are signs of a bad fuel pump.
I have the same problem, except for my maxima after it comes to a stop is sluggish starting off. Have you fould out the problem to yours yet? Thanks, Cathy
my wife kept smelling raw gas but i couldn't. problem was a tiny hole in the FRONT of the gas tank. i then remembered hitting something in the road some time back. insurance replaced it with a used tank. this hole was visible as a wet area around the hole. the hole it's self was so small you could hardly see it.just a possibility.......ray
