A broken timing belt will allow the valves to hit the tops of the pistons if your vehicle is equipped with an "interference" cylinder head. A "non-interference" head will allow the valve train to survive a broken timing belt (or chain) incident.

If the pistons are hitting the valves .wouldn't the spark plugs be hitting also.?

Probably not, unless you have the wrong (too long reach) plugs installed. The pistons hitting the valves is usually because the timing chain or belt has broken or jumped position.

I had a broken timing belt and replaced the heads, valve stems, seals, gaskets and springs. how do I time the piston to valve clearance to prevent kissing.

you don't change the piston to valve clearance
the valve timing does that as it opens and closes the valves so that the piston doesn't hit it
all the details for timing the valves are in the workshop manual as you have not bothered to include the make, model ,year and engine type in your post

Timing belt toyota tazz 2003 model

Some cars when the timing belt breaks thepistons hit the valves. To check put the car in gear and try to turn theengine over by pushing it backwards and forwards, alternately put a spanner onthe bottom pulley and try turning it. If it turns without a problem it shouldbe ok. If it did hit the valves it will have bent them, but the rings shouldnot be affected. You will need to take the head off to see damage.

Timing marks hyundai excell

What year, and what engine?

If it broke I wouldn't bother replacing it until I confirmed that the valves are NOT bent! Usually when the belt brakes on a Hyundai the piston will hit a valve or two and sometimes the valve will actually poke a hole in the piston.

A broken timming belt on a ford focus 16v, will there be damage done to the head and valves?

Highly probable
A broken timing belt will result in the pistons hitting the valves this can either bend or break the valves causing damage to the head and possibly to the pistons as well.

TIMING BELT BROKE

The timing belt connects the pistons and the head valves so that they all go up & down in the correct sequence. Turn over the engine with a broken belt and they could hit together - rather like hitting your fists together very hard.- and one or more of them could bend or break needing either replacement pistons, valves and/or head.
On the other hand you could have the luck of the devil and only need to line up the various timing marks and fit a new belt

Does a broken timing belt permanently damage a Mercury Tracer

depends on the Engine in the car.

1.9L SOHC (SEFI on Valve Cover)engine, no, they are non-interferance engines, put a new timing belt on it and go.

1.8 DOHC engine, yes, it will destroy the valves, head, pistons, and if really bad, the block too. These engines are interferance engines, where the valves just barely miss the piston as it comes up, and when the belt breaks it will hit the valves and destroy the engine.
