My 96 Buick Century will stall every once in a while. It doesn't happen every day but sometimes I will be driving and the motor will completely cut out. Then i have to get to the side of the road and put it in park and restart it. It does start up immediately after every stall. What part would be causing the stalling problem? Could it be a bad computer chip because i saw something about a PROM on the internet? The stalls usually happen on accelerations. thanks for any help. ask any further questions.
I spent endless time on this same problem on my 1992 Wagon. I changed out the computer but no help. It turned out to be the top dead center crank sensor that tells the system when the crank passes TDC. It is a small magnet essentially about the siz of a pencil eraser in the flywheel. it was cracked and occasionally would not "sense" and the car would just quit. troubleshooting was a nightmare because the computer diagnostics on the 1992 are less capable than the 1996 model. Anyway that is a relatively inexpensive fix and easy to know if it worked. Let me know how you solve this.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the fuel pump.
Crank sensor problem or the crank sensor harness commend problem also seen some ignition modules do this but most would also have like a backfire
I think jrojo is right on with these car repair questions. I would trust this answer. If its not the crank sensor, it may be a belt.
