I started my truck this morning with my command start, worked fine as always, then shut off after the timer expired. I went to start it with the key and it just kept cranking over and wouldn't fire. Disconnected battery to see if a reset would work. Still no fire. Counted ten flashes on the check engine light Now what?

Get the manual and check what the flash codes are??
What vehicle is it? What engine? What year?

Wait a second and keep your eye on the check engine light. You should see it start to light up in a series of flashes.

The light is blinking in a simple code of long and short. Long blinks mean "10" and short blinks mean "1".

The light was blinking once for a long time, and then twice for a short time. 10, 1 and 1 is error code 12. Code 12 indicates a problem with my EGR system. This is the system that sends some of the engine's exhaust into the cylinder to cool the combustion process and keep temps in the cylinders down. Having a broken EGR is relatively common on a high mileage car (I have 180,000 miles on mine) and it's a pretty easy fix. I was worried that I might have to pull over to the side of the road when I saw the light or get it to a mechanic ASAP, but now I know that it's not life threatening to the car and that it's OK if I get it looked at the next time I am at my mechanic.

You can find a list of error codes for the make and model of your car online by doing a simple search. The ones for Honda are included below.

SOURCE: 2002 Toyota Tundra Stalls

The throttle body needs cleaning. It has some carbon build up, and when the battery went dead the computer lost its learned values, one of which is base throttle position. Now its reset back to factory specs, not accounting for a dirty throttle body. Seen it a million times

SOURCE: Car runs very ruff at idle.Check engine light was flshing

You need to have it check immediately if the CEL was Flashing. This means that your engine is experiencing a serious missfire and damage to the catalytic convertors can occur if you continue to drive it. If it was on steady then it means PCM has detected a concern and you should have it check but will not cause damage.

SOURCE: 2008 Toyota Tundra shuts off immediately after starting up

It sounds like you have a bad key-transponder ECU. It should still be under watrranty. This is a known problem, and a bulletin has been distruiibuted to address this issue.

SOURCE: security light flash no security system on truck

sometimes turning the ignition on 3 times quickly without starting will reset the computer. If the van has power locks and keyless entry then try using only the keyless entry. Sometimes your car wont have a alarm but an anti theft device which will not allow it to start if it goes off or something triggers it.

Had 04 transit connect for 6 weeks. always started fine till week ago when turned cold. glow plug light only shows for about 1 second, replaced glow plugs but still the same. can only start every morning...

Sounds like the timer is bad. Since you have power when warm, the power relay must be giving the timer juice. The way it is suppose to work is you wait until the glow plug light goes out and then try to start. In cold weather it should take longer for the glow plug light to go out.

Passlock dont starter

The Passlock system is notorious for failing. There are 3 different parts of this system that can shut down the car and activate the Antitheft security system. The problem will be one of these 3 things. The key. the ignition lock cylinder, or the TDM. The easiest one is the key. The key will either have a small black chip in the key shaft or a transponder hidden in the key head. If there is a chip, they are known for wearing down and not reading correctly. Try wiggling it, cleaning the chip with alcohol, and taking all other keys off the key chain because it pulls on the key and causes problems. If you have no chip and instead a transponded key, (it will have a little "+" sign by the plastic) you can try performing a relearn procedure. It goes like this.

1. Perform a security system relearn.
2. Let the vehicle sit for more than 10 minutes with the key off.
3. Attempt to start the engine, leave the key in the run position monitoring the security system indicator.
4. After 10 minutes, the security indicator will change state.
5. Turn the key off and wait 10 seconds.
6. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine stalls, wait another 10 minutes with the key on.
7. After the second 10 minute timer has expired, turn the key off for 10 seconds.
8. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine stalls, wait another 10 minutes with the key on.
9. After the 3rd 10 minute timer has expired, shut the key off for 10 seconds.
10. The security system will relearn on the 4th starting attempt and the engine should start and run.
If that doesnt work, you will need to start replacing parts. Like i said, there are 3 parts. The key, the ignition lock cylinder, and the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM). all of these are involved in the Passlock system and could be responsible for shutting down the vehicle. And trust me they are all expensive. I always share this link for this problem because there is so much information on there and will be helpful no matter what you decide to do. If all else fails, there is PERMANENT FIX for this problem. You can bypass all aspects of the system and never worry again. That is also on this link.

I lost all power in a 2005 Trailblazer. Called GM and they said to kick the key forward and wait 10 min, and this would reset it. It did but now the radio A/C door locks and windows don't work. What...

Do it three times in a row.

1. Perform a security system relearn.
2. Let the vehicle sit for more than 10 minutes with the key off.

4. After 10 minutes, the security indicator will change state.

8. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine stalls, wait another 10 minutes with the key on.
9. After the 3rd 10 minute timer has expired, shut the key off for 10 seconds.
10. The security system will relearn on the 4th starting attempt and the engine should start and run.

If this doesnt work, you may have a failure in your system. If the security light is on, and the reprogram doesnt work, you might want to look into bypassing that antitheft system.
