One problem could be when to use the cheap stuff.Plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Clean throttle body and air filter. Check idle you can bring up is there set screw.
when the engine is a top dead center on cyl one put the distributor in so the rotor points to the no1 spark plug wire trminal on the cap try that let me know if it helps
The distributor rotor turns clockwise when viewed from above, so the
spark plug wires would be installed in the same order as the firing
order, beginning with #1.
To find which contact in side the distributor cap that the rotor is
"pointing" to, use a ratchet on the center bolt of the crankshaft and
turn the engine over by hand (clockwise direction only as viewed from
the front of the engine looking towards the firewall) until the timing
mark on the harmonic balancer aligns with the "0" mark on the timing
cover (may also be indicated by a deep "V" cut into the timing mark
indicator attached to the timing cover).
Normally, the rotor will either be "pointing" towards the firewall with a
bit more emphasis towards the driver's side cylinder bank, or it will
be pointing towards the front of the passenger side front fender. If it
is pointing towards the fender, turn the engine over again until the
timing marks align and the rotor should be pointing towards the firewall
as described above.
Find the closest terminal in the distributor cap that matches the
rotor's alignment and install the #1 wire. The distributor cap and then
be installed with the remaining wires installed around it clockwise
from #1 using the firing order.
Some turning of the distributor may be necessary to get the engine
statred. Once it does start, use a timing light to set the timing.
Remove sparkplugs, turn engine by hand to top dead center (when #1 piston is all the way up, full compression), look at distributor with the cap on it and rotor, align rotor to where #1 spark plug wire position, remove cap, remember or mark where rotor position is, then insert in engine, as in goes into slot, it will turn slightly, notice how far it moved asit went in, remove again and turn rotor back alittle so as to get it aligned to #1 position, once you got it close to were its on #1, see if there are old markings on the part of distributor shaft that may give you an idea where the clamp down piece made contact and set it there. tighten just enough to where you can rotate dirstributor by hand, put everything back together and try to start. play with distributor little at a time 'til it starts usually around halfway point.
Does "entire distributor aseembly" include the metal gear shaft??
If so, you must remove the distributor again and re-insert it in the proper gear groove.
Normally, you "mark" the distributor and the engine with a marker before you remove the shaft so that you can replace it so the gears mesh in the correct position.
You can use "trial and error" to reposition the distributor or you can:
1. Turn the engine to the "Top Dead Center" (TDC) position so that the distributor rotor points to the #1 cylinder sparkplug wire.
2. The rotor on the distributor shafdt should be positioned to "point" to the #1 sparkplug wire.
3. Re-insert the distributor gear shaft.
First you need to determin witch one is #1 on cap Witch usely is the one directly behind carb. or throutle body. than its perty strate forward from there rotor runs clockwise. Cap only goes on one way. Food for thought when you chg. cap or wires one at a time is the rule even for a seasoned mechanic.
Hi, if it is an early 97 12valve engine the plugs will be accessed through between the exhaust manifold sections at the front of the motor. if it is a 16 valve, then you remove the plug leads to get access undo them, then use the lead cap to remove the plugs, ie wqhen the plug is undone, push the lead cap back onto the plug, and lift it out. you certainly would not need to remove the valve cover.
