I have not tore into it yet ,but want answers before I start . That is why I was wandering about the over the counter chemical leak testers that can be ordered from Walmart for app. $110 . I hate to drop the moneys on nothing . I saw them on line, with good reviews, but it is reality not enough ,these people could be payed to say that .
Head gasket probs. usually involve the head. a machine shop will check the head for damage & if ya gonna tear it apart or rebuild the engine, take the block to them too
There is only one real head gasket/block test. It involves checking for bubbles in the radiator coolant, and a special tool. You can make one out of a radiator cap, and pressure sealed connection, into a tube and funnel filled with coolant...running engine will produce small bubbles if the gasket is shot.
Better test without this tool is to check the compression in each cylinder...if you have two side by side that are low and nearly equal, there's your sign...

You said the the 2 cylinders in the middle has no fire. That will be 2 & 3. It has 2 coil packs. One runs 1 & 4 the other runs 2 & 3. Check the coil pack that runs 2 & 3....The firing order is 1,3,4,2... It runs because it hits,miss,hits,miss....just enough to keep it running....

Check the spark wire for the #1 plug. I had one get burned by the header, I would check it for burns or cuts. Sorry I couldnt help more.
