When attempting to fill my 2004 Dodge Ram 5.7l Hemi the gas pump shuts off and gas backs up. When I fill from a 5 gallon tank at home, it's fine but with the pressure at the gas pump, even when I hold it so it's barely flowing, it shuts off. Due to the time of year and very cold weather I thought maybe something froze in the vent tube but it has since warmed and still having the problem.
Take the fuel fill hose off the tank and check the tank screen . Could have debris. Hope this helps you.
My work truck does this as well. Pulling out the nozzle doesnt work either. I know it sounds wierd, but try turning the nozzle sideways or upside down when filling the tank. Works well with my work truck.....

could be that the electronic throttle could be icing up. just remove the air cleaner and have someone cycle the key. the throttlebody will cycle prior to starting to do a self check. chrysler has a tsb out for this concern. tsb # 14-002-05

does your car run fine on the 5 gallons you stick in each time? if so I would say that your fuel pump is ok. I would take the tank out and see if there is some obstruction in the fill tube and tank orface, also look inside the tank for any floating debris, check and or replace the tank vent

do not worry about draining it, pour about 6 to 8 ounces of engine oil in it, and top it up with fresh fuel, it will be fine. The only way to drain the tank is to remove it and turn it over.

my 2004 dodge ram 1500 2x2with a hemi 5.7 will not accept fuel.As soon as i start to fill it backs up the filler and stops the pump.the only way i can fill the tank is to hold the fuel nozzel out of the hole ans slowly shoot the fuel into the filler tube. This is not only unsafe for my wife and kids but very time consuming.replaced fuel fill tube already and had breather tube blownout and scoped by a mechanic. He now tells me i need a new $500 gas tank.Is this something i can have the dealership fix for free?
