Connect a timing light sensor to the #1 plug and point the light at the harmonic balancer. Rotate the distributor (after loosening the hold-down nut) until the indicator shows the index mark at the proper location (which is probably 6-12° BTDC). If you can get hold of a "Chiltons" manual for the car, you'll be good. The '66 T-Bird had either a 289 or a 350. Be sure to get the right manual for your engine.
