heater core is located on the front passenger side next to your ac evaporator assembly, your heater unit uses engine coolant water as a heater , the reason why you smell anti freeze because your core has a leak.
you can disassemble the unit if you have the right tool and by removing the front glove box and console panel to expose and give way to check that unit, it normally fastened by screws and a few bolts and nuts.
you will have to replace
the heater core if you are confirmed the heater valve is cracked. 1.Disconnect the negative battery cable.2.Drain the cooling system and disconnect the heater hoses from the
heater core tubes. Plug the hoses and the heater core tubes to prevent coolant
leakage.3.Remove the 3 nuts located below the windshield wiper motor
attaching the left end of the plenum to the dash panel. Remove the 1 nut
retaining the upper left corner of the evaporator case to the dash panel.4.Disconnect the vacuum supply hose(s) from the vacuum source. Push
the grommet and vacuum supply hose(s) into the passenger compartment.5.Remove the right and left lower instrument panel insulators.6.On 1990-00 vehicles: 1.Remove the cross body brace and
disconnect the wiring harness from the temperature blend door actuator. 2.Disconnect the ATC sensor tube from the
evaporator case connector. 7.Disconnect the vacuum jumper harness at the multiple vacuum
connector near the floor air distribution duct. Disconnect the white vacuum
hose from the outside-recirculating door vacuum motor.8.Remove the 2 hush panels.9.Remove 1 plastic push fastener retaining the floor air
distribution duct to the left end of the plenum. Remove the left screw and
loosen the right screw on the rear face of the plenum and remove the floor air
distribution duct.10.Remove the 2 nuts from the 2 studs along the lower flange of the
plenum.11.Carefully move the plenum rearward to allow the heater core tubes
and the stud at the top of the plenum to clear the holes in the dash panel.
Remove the plenum from the vehicle by rotating the top of the plenum forward,
down and out from under the instrument panel. Carefully pull the lower edge of
the instrument panel rearward, as necessary, while rolling the plenum from
behind the instrument panel.12.Remove the 4 retaining screws from the heater core cover and
remove the cover from the plenum assembly. Pull the heater core and seal
assembly from the plenum assembly.
This is a fairly easy fix. Disconnect the heater hoses under the hood. Go to passenger side under the dash remove the lower panel from the dash to access the heater box. Unplug any and all connections on the lower half of the heater box and remove the lower half of the box should be about six screws you should see the heater core and the evaporator core. Heater core skinnier of the two should have one or two straps holding it in remove the straps and remove the core and replace.
Is there a clicking sound coming from the center of the dash at the bottom of the windshield? If so, it is the blend door motor which changes from heat to a/c. It requires the removal of the dash to replace it, It could be a vacuum leak under the center of the dash above the floor hump
Have replaced my heater core in my 2001 regular cab 4wd in december 2009. Had to pull the complete dash including the complete metal dash behind the dash that you see. Also had to remove the right passenger side inner fender well to acess the remaining two bolts that hold the heater core cover to the firewall. Its an insane job to do but the repair shop books call for 9 1/2 hrs to do the job. I'm not an expert but this is what it takes.
There are 3 small bolts across the top where the front defrost grill is. 2 large bolts directly under the headlight switch and another big bolt lower right hand corner of the glovebox area.
You have to pull the dash almost out to replace the heater core. first drain the coolant and remove the heater hoses in the engine compartment. Next lower the steering column. there are 4-5 8mm screws onthe top of the dash, and tw 13mmbolts on the sides remove the kick panels to see them. Also remove the airbag module on the tranny hump under the dash.when all is unfastened you can pull the dash back on the passengers side back and almost put it on the seat. you will see the heater core on the top of the heater box. Discharge the ac and remove the heater box fasteners in the engine compartment . pull the box down inthe cab of the truck r&r core. sound worse thatn it really is good luck
