Sounds like your battery is being overcharged. First things first. Go to a wand style car wash. Remove anything that prevents you being able to see the entire top surface of the battery. with the engine running pressure wash the top of and area around the battery. Typically any smell will go away with this pressure wash. If the smell persists you need to check the voltage regulator in the alternator. You can do this yourself with a multi meter. Set the meter on DC Volts. With the engine running check the voltage at the battery terminals. The voltage should be between 14 to 14.5 volts. If you get a reading of 15 or higher... change your alternotor.
