See a witch ...
Could it be that the lights go off by default once the engine is turned on ? ... I had a car that did turn the interior lights off once the engine was started , for safety reasons . As for the other problem , it may need a new switch ( dimmer ) or the all system needs a re-setting ... usually a service that needs specialist equipment . You could ... ' had ' a switch to the interior light , a cheaper way of turning them on / off ... if you catch my drift .

Testimonial: "yes I can turn them off and on with the dimmer switch now thanks its a start"

2000 jeep grand cherokee interior lights won't turn on...

Check your owners manual for your fuse panel, it will show you the location of the fuse panel, as well as the fuse location for the interior lamps. If the fuses seem ok, check your door switches, located near your door hinges on each door, they should be spring loaded, and mov in and out freely. It is very likely some dirt,or rust has locked one of the in the closed position, however if all the switches are funtioning properly, Check the interior dimmer switch, this controls your dash light brightness, as well as your interior lights. If you cant control the dash light brightness this is likely the culprit.

Jeep 2001 Cherokee Sport Rear Passenger door was hit. Lights will not go out.

Can you open the door? Most likely the door is not making (enough) contact with the plunger which shuts off the lights. If you can get to this plunger, until you get the door fixed, either tape the plunger to the "in" position, or tape something to the door itself to close the gap between the door and the plunger to make the plunger go in. I have had to use quarters (25cents) and duck tape until more permanent repasirs could be made.
Also: there should be on your dash: panel and interior light dimmer/turn off switch. You can turn this/set this so the interior lights do not come on at all.

I would check the door adjar switches. IF all the door adjar switches check okay, then check the head light switch .

Assuming the head light switch and door adjar switches are okay , Then there is a wiring problem. This is the worst case scenario .
