Charging problem

Check that your alternator is actually charging the battery. With volt meter and car running check for at least 13.5 volts at battery. If not check fuses, big red wire from alternator to battery and for actual output of alternator at bolt where big red wire attaches to alternator. Should have battery voltage with car not running and at least 13.5 when engine is idling(motor running)

Check the fusible link between the alternator thick red wire and positive terminal of the battery with the battery disconnected. If that's OK, compare the non-running battery voltage to the running battery voltage and see that it is about 12.7 volts not running and 13.7 to 14 volts running. If you don't see the higher voltages when the engine is running, your alternator is not producing the required charging voltage. At that point you need to determine if you are getting the field voltage to the alternator rotor which is the smaller wires on the alternator. The voltage will vary with the charging demand and electrical load on the system. These voltages come from the engine control module. The belt is turning the alternator, right!

On the alternator there is a heavy red cable (wire) going to the battery. The battery gets charged though that wire. There is a fuse in that wire between the alt and batt. That fuse is called a fusible link. Check the voltage on that wire at the alternator. You should have baytery voltage there. If you have no voltage, the fusible link is burned out.

Chevy van g20 year 1994 the battery dies has new battery and new alternator but each morning its dead need to charge the battery need help have any ideas and please talk problem please

Does the battery light work when you switch the ignition on? This provides a live feed to the alternator via the ignition bulb, the rotor needs a live feed to start the charge process, if the bulb has blown it won't charge (thin wire connected to the IND on the alternator). To check for a power drain, disconnect the negative battery lead put a AMP meter in series, (DON'T TRY TO START, YOU WILL BLOW THE METER). If you get a reading above 0.05amps (clock) you have a drain, pull the fuses one at a time and watch for a drop in the meter reading. Hope this helps.

Dash lights won't work and alternator doesn't appear to be charging battery. All visible fuses are good

The alternator needs power from the battery to energise the rotor, so without the dash lights the alternator is not charging. Check for a fuse link near the battery. Get the dash lights on and the charging fault will clear. Sorry I can't be more specific as to the dash problem.

Is the battery light on the dash board working? If the light does not work the alternator will not charge, it needs the power from the light to energise the rotor.

Replaced alternator now its blowning the battery

I assume the 'new' alternator is a rebuilt unit and these are normally as good as new but they can be defective right out of the box. I don't know if your voltage regulator is integrated into the alternator or separate. If it is the latter, it may still be bad. They aren't expensive to replace if they are not in the body of the alternator. If replacing this didn't cure the problem, continue on below.

The 'battery fuse' doesn't really have a lot to do with protecting the battery since these must accept lots (40-50) amps briefly when charging and 100-200 amps to turn over the engine to start it.
I think that fuse is universally between the battery and the control terminal of the alternator and supplies a varying amount of current to the rotor of the unit. The variation is dependent on the charge state of the battery and the loads from various users in the car.
If the rotor of the rebuilt unit has a short in it, much higher current can flow than is normal and I think this may be what is blowing the fuse.
If you have someone who can check the alternator in the car, I would have it checked.

Battery not charging

Alternators don't have magnets. It's not like a DC motor where you can just turn it to produce electricity. Alternators need 12v power from the "exciter wire". This is usually a small wire that accompanies the large wire on the alternator. Modern cars may have more than two wires, but the idea is the same. Anyway, the exciter wire energizes the magnetic field when you turn the key on. Without this electro-magnetic field, the alternator will never produce power. First, check all your connections to ensure that no corrosion or breaks exist. Then check your fuses. The exciter wire circuit is probably fused. On some german cars, the exciter wire circuit goes directly through the instrument cluster. If you feel like getting your hands dirty, purchase a voltage meter or a test light. Turn the key on and test the smaller wires on the alternator harness. One of those will be the exciter wire and should see +12V when the key is turned on. If you see no voltage at one of those small wires when the key is turned on, there's your problem. Due to the nature of this problem, it really is tough to say where to start looking for the break or which wire to test with your test light. You may have to involve a professional mechanic. Good luck.
