Question about 2000 Land Rover Discovery

2 Answers

I own a 2000 land rover discovery 2, I have a new overheating problem. Just had the head gaskets replaced, along with new plugs and wires, valley pan, valve cover gaskets, a new water pump and gasket, new thermostat housing unit, new coolant oil and filter, and new temperature gage. Now it overheats. Fan is working and the electric fan comes on once correct temperature is met. Could it be the fan clutch? All I can see at this point is the temp gage rising above the mid point after about ten minutes of idling. Need a good lead on what to do. Thanks.

Try replacing the coolant temp sensor as it is over sensitive and is not giving correct temperature reading

Try this procedure:

  • The thermostat can be stuck close. If you feel the upper hose very hot and the lower hose cooler than normal, it may be a stuck thermostat.

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

2000 Land Rover Discovery Blower motor resistor location and removal

Do you already have access to your blower motor? If so you should find the resistor on the motor housing where the blower output is located. It will have wiring plugged into it. When you remove it it should look like a heatsink.

if it's sluggish and bucking and there may or may not be a check engine light on, it's probably in need of spark plugs, wires, and / or ignition coil packs. also if it overheated, it may have blown the a head gasket or two. at least take it to a good land rover dealer and have a multi point inspection done. ive worked on a lot of discos where theyve needed a water pump, head gaskets, throttle heater and gasket, new coolant lines, front main seal, just for starters.... most just get a complete engine reseal where we take the entire engine out and put all new gaskets in it. at least a $2,000 job for the customer. it may be time to look for a good deal on it as a trade in.
