Put it in park, turn key to off, it should come out. If not, the mechanism may need repair.

My pontiac aztek will not release the key from the ignition. Tried looking under the steering wheel for a release button or switch and it won't work.

If the key won't come out when the transmission is in park and the key is rotated to the off position, you may have a mechanical problem. The ignition lock assembly is cheaply available.

Sometime the steering wheel will get jammed and you need to rotate it hard backward and forward to get it to come loose. You will need to turn the key as you do this. When free the key will turn if that is the problem and push on the brake also they sometime have to be pushed to release the wheel or to start the newer models.

Can't get the key out of the ignition, it is locked up. it's an 2005 pontiac aztek

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

You might want to try to turn the steering wheel a little while turning the key off. If it doesn't help, please do spray wd40 on the key hole and let it sit for atleast 5mins. then turn the key off while turning the wheel. This usually works.

Hope you find this information helpful enough and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Key Stuck in ythe ingnition

There is a hole under the steering column right near the ignition switch, if the key gets stuck, stick a pen or something in the hole, you will feel the little lever move and you can remove the key.
