What would make a rocker arm a little loose

I have two lest rocker arms getting loose after i redid the seal on the right side oil had a little water in it from rain that day and i didnt know all ready did oil change so i need to narrow down what to do next

Rain water will not get into the oil unless you had the rocker cover off and working on the engine outside in the rain.
water in the oil is coolant getting into the oil either from a head gasket problem or corrosion holes behind the water pump impeller. If there are loose rockers when running then there may be a blockage in the hydraulic followers for those rockers or there is wear in the rocker bushes and on the rocker shaft.

Ok so ik I'm posting allot haha but does anyone know where or how to adjust lifters just found out mine r just now needed adjustment in near mount Vernon WA or a price at least haha


In engines with rocker arm valve systems, the procedure I'm familiar with is to remove a rocker arm cover, and (one at a time!) while the engine is running, slowly back off the rocker arm retainer nut or bolt just until you hear the lifter tapping, then tighten it a quarter turn. If you can identify a lifter that is already tapping, tighten its rocker arm slowly until it stops tapping, then adjust it. Do not over-tighten! This can damage the engine.

Listen carefully to how the engine sounds; if it starts to stumble when you tighten a loose rocker arm, you've gone too far. If you cannot get the engine to run well without tapping, you may have too much wear in the valve train and may be due for a head overhaul, or you don't have adequate oil pressure in the lifters in question.
Repeat until all rocker arms are done. Replace the rocker arm cover using a new gasket, then (in a V-engine), repeat the procedure on the other side of the engine.

Wearing safety goggles, or better yet, a transparent face shield, is strongly recommended. Sometimes oil will squirt out a considerable distance from the lifter side of the rocker arm during adjustment, and the direction is not readily predictable.

I'll bet it's a loose rocker arm.
You can pull the valve covers and just shake the rocker arms and tell easily if one is real loose.

I have a tundra 06 an it does a cliking sound .it comes from the motor. i check everything around the motor and nothing is loose i wonder if there is something loose inside.


The problem is probably a loose rocker arm or a broken rod. You can easily access the rocker arms by taking top cover off the engine. It should be 6 or 8 bolts and looks like an upside down bread loaf pan. There will be a little bit of oil (assuming the engine is off) but it shouldn't be too messy. There will be a number of rockers which are levers with springs on one side. One bolt should hold down each rocker, just make sure that none of them are loose. Since it is a "V" engine (V6 or V8) there will be two of these covers, half of the rockers under each one.

If all of the rockers are tight (don't crank them down excessively just check to see if one is very loose). then it might be a broken rod. To remove the rod you need to remove the rocker arms one at a time and pull out the rod with a special tool that you can probably get from your local parts store. When you find it they can also sell you a replacement rod.

If you want to narrow it down you can turn the engine on with one sides cover off (but hold a paper towel over the rockers or you will get sprayed with oil) and listen to see if you can hear which one is broken.

I have oil leakin on top of my spark plug wires in the tube ive changed the valve cover gasket 3 times i even put high heat cilcone over around the spark plug tubes but all it does is slow it down im not...


Two things:

1. Make sure you torque the bolts down to the right specification, which is 83 inch pounds (or about 7 ft lbs). Work opposite end of the cover and start with a lower torque first (like 50 in lbs), then go up to 83. It's just a good practice.

2. If that does not work, get a Fel Pro gasket set VS50365R (pic below). What is special about this set is the really thin o-rings there in the middle. Those are the rocker arm tube seals. You need to take the rocker arms off in order to replace them, but this way you're doing a complete job and you probably won't have that issue again. If you don't want to get the whole set again (since you already replaced most of it 3x over), you can probably just go to a honda dealership and pick up the 4 you need.

If you decide to do this yourself, it's a good idea to get a set of feeler gauges so you can properly gap the clearance from the rocker arms to the valves. Intake valves should be gaped to .010 in, and exhaust valves to .012 inches. Also, yes, you can take the rocker arm assembly off without removing the distributor...just take off that one bolt that is in the way. The torque for the bolts holding in the rocker assembly is 9 ft-lbs for the smaller 6x1mm bolts and 16 ft-lbs for the larger 8x1.25mm bolts. Here is the torque sequence...

I replaced the lifters in my 2000 galant 2.4 L and i need to know what to torque the rocker arm shafts to.


1.5 and 1.8 engines:
* Install the rocker arm and shaft assemblies. Tighten the rocker arm shaft retainer bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).

* Check valve adjustment and install the valve cover. Tighten the valve cover bolts to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm) for the 1.5L engine or to 29 inch lbs. (3.3 Nm) for the 1.8L engine.



2.0 engine
* Lubricate the rocker shaft with clean engine oil and install the rockers and springs in their proper places.

* Install the rocker shaft assemblies on the engine. Tighten the bolts gradually and evenly to 21-25 ft. lbs. (29-35 Nm).



2.4 engine

* Fit the rocker shaft springs from above and position them so that they are at right angles to the plug side. Install the rocker springs before installing the exhaust side rocker shaft and rocker arm assembly.

* Install the exhaust side rocker shaft assembly in the engine. Tighten the rocker shaft mounting bolts gradually and evenly to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
* Remove the lash adjuster retaining tools.
* Install the rocker cover and tighten the mounting bolts to 30 inch lbs. (3 Nm).

* Reinstall the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.

A rocker arm is the arm that sits on top of the valve stem and connects to the push rods 'the push rods sit on the cam so when engine is running, the push rods go up and down in a timed sequence and with the rocker arms, open and close the inlet and exhaust valves. the rocker arm is located inside the valve(rocker)cover .If the rocker arm gets loose or comes out.
Check the nuts on the shaft which holds the rocker arms.either the shaft or nuts are got loose.They need to be tightened.Don't make it too tight or too loose.  Too tight,and they don't flutter right. Too loose,and they allow the rocker arms to wiggle out of whack. Other possibility can be  something is broken, bent, collapsed, or out of adjustment.

Left side:

To install:
  1. Lubricate all the valvetrain components with engine oil.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Pushrods and the rocker arms and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) plus 30 degrees
    • Rocker arm cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
    • PCV valve to the rocker arm cover
    • Coolant tube with the thermostat bypass hose and tighten the bolt to 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm) and the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
    • AIR check valve pipe and torque the adapters to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
    • Engine mount strut and torque the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
    • Spark plug wires
    • Negative battery cable
Right side:

To install:
  1. Lubricate all the valve train components with engine oil.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Pushrods and the rocker arms and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) plus 30 degrees
    • Rocker arm cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
    • Power brake booster vacuum pipe to the plenum
    • EVAP solenoid and ignition coil assembly
    • Spark plug wires
    • Alternator bracket and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    • Alternator and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Negative battery cable
  3. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.

There is a ticking sound coming from teh drivers side of the motor top end when i start it up when i drive it goes away but its there when i start it or ideling


In order to give you a solution to your problem, I need to explain a little bit about the valve train in your engine, the engine itself, and how it works.

1.You have an Internal Combustion engine. It is a Four Stroke engine. The engine has a Cylinder Block with cylinders inside. There is a piston for each cylinder which goes up, and down. The piston/s are connected to a crankshaft. The crankshaft turns the transmission, which in turn turns the driveshaft, to the rear differential. The rear differential has axles, which the rear wheels are bolted to. The four strokes are , Intake Stroke, Compression Stroke, Combustion Stroke, and Exhaust Stroke.

The piston goes down the cylinder drawing the fuel/air mixture in. (Intake Stroke) The Intake valve opens. The piston comes back up the cylinder, and Compresses the fuel/air mixture. (Compression Stroke) Both the Intake and Exhaust valve are closed. The spark plug fires igniting the fuel/air mixture, and shoves the piston down. (Combustion Stroke) Finally the Exhaust valve opens, and expels the burnt gases. (Exhaust Stroke)

The animation shows an engine with an Overhead Camshaft. Your camshaft is located in the Cylinder Block, and not in the Cylinder Head, as shown.

2.Your Camshaft is a shaft with egg shaped lobes on it. As the tip of the egg shape comes to the top, it pushes up on a Hydraulic Lifter. This lifter in turn pushes up on a Pushrod, which pushes up on a Rocker Arm. The Rocker Arm in turn pushes down on either the Intake Valve, or the Exhaust Valve, opening them.

A Rocker Arm is shaped a lot like a See-saw. Just like the one's at a child's playground. As one side goes up, the other side comes down. The Pushrod pushes up on one side of the Rocker Arm, and the other side of the Rocker Arm pushes down on the valve, opening it.

A Hydraulic Lifter is a small cylinder that has a piston in it. Oil goes through a tiny hole in the side of the lifter, and this keeps the piston in a certain position. (That's why this lifter is named 'Hydraulic', because it uses oil inside) The Pushrod rests on this piston. The hydraulic action of the Hydraulic Lifter, keeps slack out of the valve train. The pushrod to rocker arm distance, and the rocker arm to valve distance.

What you are hearing, is a clicking sound from clearance being created, in-between the pushrod to rocker arm, and/or rocker arm to valve stem. A metal to metal clicking sound.

Solution? Depends on how mechanically inclined you are, or you may want to refer this job to an auto repair shop. The valve cover needs to be removed, and the nut on each rocker arm needs to be adjusted. Adjusting the nut down, (Clockwise), pushes the rocker arm down on the rocker arm stud, a little. This removes the slack, and makes things nice, and quiet again. Your engine will also run better, and you'll get better gas mileage.

DON'T do this, or have it down, and eventually the slack that is in there will increase. This will break parts! There IS a technique in doing this. If you know of someone who is good at adjusting valves, they can do it. They MUST be good however. If you adjust the Rocker Arm Nut too far down, you will lose power, and the exhaust valve face will burn. Not far enough down, and you get the clicking sound you hear now. About 1/4 turn down, to 1/2 turn down, should do it.

3. Install the ignition coil. 4. Install the rocker arm and rocker arm shaft. Refer to "Rocker Arms and Rocker Arm Shafts" section. 83e48db.jpg 5. Using special tools, Camshaft Oil Seal Installer (09221-21000), press fit the camshaft oil seal. Be sure to apply engine oil to the external surface of the oil seal. Insert the oil seal along the camshaft front end and install by driving the installer with a hammer until the oil seal is pulley seated. bda0592.jpg 6. You either have had the wrong valve seals installed, they are physically missing, or the valves are incorrect (too loose in the guides/stem too thin). The rocker arm seals will not contribute to your issue. If it did not have the oil smoke before you took the head off, the issue is with whatever the machine shop did. Valve seals have to fit TIGHT, or oil will go down the valve stem into the intake.
Take the head back to the machine shop & tell them to fix it. For free.
