Question about 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK 220

1 Answer

I have a 2013 M B GLK the am radio has static when near overhead power lines and over passes it is more pronounced in the lower frequencies 700 and 740 better at 940 dealer has not been able to resolv

Dealer has not tried hard enough I know IF from power lines is the cause but the radio must have some system to counter the I F problem since my other 2012 GLK does not have the problem! The radio works fine when away from the overhead power lines or away from overpass.

Radio cuts out when under overhead wires

This is typical behavior for car radios. The noise from the power line drowns out the radio signal and turns down the automatic gain control. The only thing you can do for it is tune to a stronger radio station or keep moving until you are out from under the power line.

The fuse might be built into the cable to the lighterand/or radio. It's called "fusable link", this type of fuse looks like a cable. Or another type of fusable link might be in the fuse box under the hood near the firewall.

What is causing the "geiger counter" sound near the speakers near the left and right ends of the dashboard?

I would suspect that the unit is picking up ignition sparks possible from a lead flashing over. The voltage variations will be picked up by the antenna and comes through as a stop sound. Have it checked out at a radio shop

IS ONLY PICKING UP STATIC RADIO SIGNAL. ALL STATIONS

Yes you have to have an antenna. Does the car not have one originally? If you changed the radio you would have unhooked a large black wire in the back of it. Or maybe it just came unplugged. Anyways without one it won't pick up ****. Good luck

The radio emitts static on the AM stations when I step on the brake pedal, but does not emitt static when on the FM stations.

This can happen for three reasons:

Do you have tinted windows? The AM radio signal travels further than FM due to being a lower frequency; however, its transmissioncan can easily be interfered. Tinted windows affect the AM signal's transmission to your car and not FM which is at a much faster frequency. Once I tinted my windows, the AM interference went way up when I accelerated and braked. I only listen to my FM channels now due to this annoying interference.

You may have electrical interference in your car causing this as well. Does it happen when rolling down the windows as well?

Third, it could be distance, the AM's transmission tower can be far away and you might be barely in range whereas the FM's transmission tower may be closer.
