Ya blew your rad! Water and transmission clutches don't mix well, might be a good idea to flush both systems after repairs are done. Would also recommend the 'not driving it till I get the money for the repairs' kind of thing.

Why would there be transmission fluid in radiator?


Most vehicles with automatic transmissions cool the transmission fluid by running it through a cooler which is actually in the radiator, If there is a leak in this part, known as an intercooler you will get trans fluid in your radiator and water in your transmission. The one to worry about is the latter. Your transmission is made up of clutches and bands which are basically resin impregnated paper glued to a steel band or clutch plate. The glue that is used is water soluble. Meaning the water will cause your transmission clutches and bands to disintegrate. The water will also cause other problems like rusting valves in the valve body. The easy fix is to buy a external cooler which either attaches to the outside of the radiator or car frame and re route the cooler lines through it bypassing the intercooler. Also plug or cap off the fittings to said intercooler or you will have a radiator leak. Flush out both the cooling system and the transmission with clean fluids to remove contamination. If you do this quick enough you may be OK.

I have a 2004 Envoy. How can water get into transmission if radiator is ok and no flood driving?


there is a vent hose on the top of the transmission,and the hose is suppose to hook to the fire wall,but sometimes it falls down and water gets in the transmission

My car is overheating. i got water in my transmission, and transmission fluid in my water. is it my radiator? can my transmission cooling lines be backwards? my car is not smoking and no water is comming...


Sounds like the transmission cooler tank with in the radiator has gone bad, the transmission lines can go on either way, does not matter, replace radiator and have cooling system flush and have a transmission flush also done.

Will a dirty transmission filter cause leakage from the top of the transmission? Back pressure?


There is several things that will cause the fluid to come out the vent on the transmission. The transmission has been over filled or you may have water to get in the transmission. Look at the fluid and if it's not a deep red then you havepossible water deluteing the fluid.The water would come from the radiator and get inside causing it to over fill. The best thing to do is drain the fluid and change the filter and inspect the transmission. If you find out that water has got into the radiator,then by no means have the radiator transmission cooler checked for a crack or broken connection. Hope this will help you.

Newly rebuilt transmission is found to have water in it-the rebuild shop was the last place to add fluid or to have anything to do with it. how do you think the water got in?


Hello you have water inside your transmission. Dont drive it at all it will damage the clutches internally. This is probably the same thing that caused the last transmission to go out. This may sound crazy but there is a transmission cooler built into the radiator,and once the engine gets hot it builds pressure in the radiator causing water to be pushed into the transmission cooler lines. A quick check will be just remove the radiator cap and see if transmission fluid is in the radiator. If you have acess to a radiator pressurer tester, then you can remove the cooler lines and pressurize the system no more than what is on the radiator cap and see if any coolant leaks. If so you will have to replace all hoses and the radiator. The hoses will swell up and deteriorate in no time because of the trans fluid.

Water in transmission is a bad radiator and it needs to be replaced or you can by pass the radiator and buy a transmission cooler instead of running the transmission fluid through the radiator. The transmission cooler is built in to the radiator on the passenger side, the high line is on the top and the return will be on the bottom. Good luck and hope this helps.

My trans fluid is mixing with my radiator fluid, what can i do.


I hate to contradict the prior poster, but I would not see how a blown head gasket could get transmission fluid into the radiator. Motor oil, yes, but transmission fluid, no.

the transmission fluid in your tranny runs out of the transmission and up into the radiator to cool it off.

So if there is transmission fluid in the radiator, I'd look for a leak in the radiator. If it is mixing the two fluids then the leak is probalby internal.

Remember that if the radiator is now 'mixing' water and transmission fluid, there is a possibility that the fluid/water mixture may be going back into the transmission as well

Sounds like you have transmission fluid in the antifreeze. The transmission cooler might be leaking in the radiator. If it is, replace the radiator.

It is not unheard of for the transmission cooler to fail in such a manner that you end up with coolant in your transmission, and transmission fluid in your radiator.

If this just happened recently you can usually just replace the radiator and flush the transmission as you said and be fine.

However water/coolant is extremely harmful to the automatic transmission, it can cause the internal clutches to break down inside it and fail.

If it were my vehicle I would take my chances and get a new radiator installed and flush both the cooling system and the transmission, this will more than likely cure your problem.
