Question about Cars & Trucks

2 Answers

I have an artic cat 400. they put a kit in front differential because of a recall. to keep differential from locking up.

No problems before kit being installed. In 4 wheel drive 4 wheeler vibrates, growls, and rattles. It gets worse the faster you go. Very little noise in 2 wheel drive, no vibration. all symtoms are coming from front differential. What could they have done wrong?

Didn't use shims or tighten up bearings. Didn't toque down to specs. This goes for all differentials. That had no problems and went in for recalls. Take it back. Don't run it to long as you will destroy other parts.

Why won't my front differential engage? 1988 Chevy

Ok I know this question is old but for any one else who has this problem, I want to clear some info up. GM did not use vacuum on the 4x4 systems on the full size series. Only used on the S series (S10, S Blazers). Here is how to accurately trouble shoot these problems with the full size 4x4. Remove the front actuator from the front axle ( keep it plugged up and let it hang). Put the T-Case in 4x4 Hi or Lo doesn't matter. Turn key on (don't start the engine) . Now check the actuator to see if it has extended. If (no) now check the plug to see if you have current . If you have current to the plug, change the actuator. Problem solved. If no current to the plug. Check for broken wires ( fix if any) If no broken wires. There is another switch on the T-Case that sends power to the actuator Replace it.. Back to the actuator.... If everything checked out and actuator works. With the T-Case locked in 4x4, try to turn the front drive shaft by hand. With the T-Case locked in 4x4 you shouldn't be able to turn the drive shaft. If drive shaft doesnt turn the T-Case is in good shape and the problem will be in the front differential. In these cases the most common problem is an exploded thrust washer. At this point the front differential needs to be rebuilt. Back to the T-Case..... With the T-Case locked in 4x4, if the drive shaft spins, the problem will be in the T-Case and at this point the T-Case will need rebuilt......... I hope you get the information you need to troubleshoot the GM 4x4 issues.

I dropped my 2004 tacoma off at the dealer to get the frame treatment (recall) done. They called and wanted ot service trhe front and rear differentials for $400 (along wth th list of other routine things...

A 60,000-mile or 72-month service adds on replacement of the limit-slip differential in four-wheel-drive models. The largest service, 90,000 miles or 108 months, adds on a timing-belt replacement. A 100,000-mile service calls for the replacement of engine coolant

I have a 96 chevy 4x4 and my front wheels aren't pulling. i replaced the acuator and still nothing. 4x4 light flashes in 4L and 4H. what could be the problem. is there auto locking hubs on that model...

no there is no auto locking hubs. 96 chevys have a ifs (independent front suspension) this give it more ground clearance but does not have lock out hubs, the cv axles go into the front differential an spin freely until you put it in 4wd, how this works is your transfercase spins the drive shaft that goes into the front differential an while you put it in 4wd it sends power to the actuator to lock the front differential. if your front end isnt pulling you either popped your 1 of your cv axles but if you did this you would know because it makes a very loud thunking noise while you're driving, my guess is you have a short thats not sending power to the actuator. check to see if the wiring harnesses are connected and check if the fuse that operates the 4wd in the cab of the truck is not blown. also actuators for these trucks are horrible they go out alot. also you can try reversing a few feet putting your truck in neutral an then try putting it in 4wd

I would like to upgrade from the present vaccuum 4wd actuator to electric solenoid set up for my 2001 s10 blazer. Who sells this?

There is no electric solenoid set up for the S10's, the upgrade was for the full size SUV's from the early 88 to 98 that had a thermal actuator. There is a mechanical system that is made for the S10's but it requires drilling a hole through your fire wall, running a cable into your cab and mounting the cable lock somewhere under your dash for easy access to lock in your differential.
I had the same problem and i just locked up my front differential all the time, it's been like that now for over 10 years without any issues. The transfer case is not locked up so your front axle is still not synced with your rear axle and is still free to rotate at a different speed then the rear. Just make sure you service the front differential like your suppose to and you should be fine on running with the front differential locked.
Thank you for using fixya and check to make sure that there is no cracks i your vacuum line that is keeping your front actuator from functioning or a failed vacuum switch on top of the transfer case.

95 passport shakes when4x4 is engaged during acceleration

Bad u-joints at front driveline and/or u-joints at axle connection from behind rotors- going into front differential. Need new u-joints at either the driveline front and back (going into differential or to Transfer case) or the Left and Right side axles going into the differential. Put Locking (or "Lock-outs) hubs on front axles... WARN brand are best... about $75 a pair and you can do it yourself, easily.
