You need to check the fan operation and then check for head gasket issues

After replacing the thermostat, you must bleed the air from the cooling system.

To bleed air from the 2.2L and 2.5L engines, remove the plug or sensor on the top of the thermostat housing. Fill the radiator with coolant until the coolant comes out the hole. Since the plug is made out of steel and the thermostat housing is aluminum, it is a good idea to apply an anti-seizing compound or Teflon® tape on the plug threads prior to installation. Install the plug and continue to fill the radiator. This will vent all trapped air from the engine.

Any trapped air in the heating system will have to be displaced by coolant. Once the cooling system is filled, with the radiator cap off, turn of the heater at it's highest setting. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temp. You should see a drop in the coolant level as the air in the heating system is displaced by coolant. Add coolant to the proper level and replace the radiator cap.

Keep a close eye on the coolant level for at least the next couple of weeks. The cooling system is a "closed" system. Any significant decrease in coolant level indicates a problem.

You have an air pocket in the cooling system. To bled it out you will have to park vehicle on an incline or jack up the front end untill the radiator cap is higher than the heater core. The remove radiator cap and run engine until warm then hold rpm to about 1200 rpm's and top off coolant level until you have no more bubbles.

I recommend flushing the radiator thoroughly if not done recently. there seems to be some sort of blockage in the radiator at this time. if you get lots of metal fragments that are flushed out during this flush, i will then recommend a rebuild on the radiator or replacement of the radiator. make sure the cooling fans are cycling on time as well.

Let the engine cooldown,then open the bleed screw on on the thermostat house,do not remove just loosen----fill water in the radiator bottle slowly and watch for water coming out of the bleed screw----
sometimes the bleed screw is blocked due to anti-freeze-then take the screw off completely ,clean and replace----always make sure the engine is cool

Usually the main reason for a Subaru to over heat is a blown head gasket. If it is pushing fluid out through the overflow bottle. I would suspect a blown head gasket.

1. plugged radiator core
2. Wrong mix of water and coolant.

Since you have done the basics, more information is needed. Under what conditions does it overheat, and how severely? Only when at idle for several minutes? Could be bad fan clutch or missing/damaged fan shroud. Severely overheats so bad you can't drive it at all? Blown head gasket? You can often diagnosis this by running with radiator cap removed and see bubbles in the radiator, or also look for water in oil, or oil in the coolant. Also, check with parts store. I think certain years of these run a reverse direction water pump, and if you get the wrong one they will overheat badly.

Hi Kim,

I can feel your frustration. It sounds like you've done all the logical stuff already. The "donut hole" in your process would seem to be not changing the water pump. The water pump as you might imagine, is responsible for circulating (pumping) the relatively cool water in the radiator into the running engine that contains the hot water. Hoses connect the two together. A thermostat is between the radiator and the engine. Once the water in the running engine gets to a certain temperature, the thermostat opens allowing the water pump to send cool water into the engine and hot water out to the radiator to be cooled. The heater core is usually on the passenger side firewall area.

It sounds like the water pump is the only thing left to change - if it isn't working - it can't circulate the water - and will result in overheating. Lastly, a clogged heater core shouldn't cause the engine to overheat - in fact, if the engine begins to overheat, you should turn the heat to HIGH fan and HIGH temperature to help remove some of the heat in the coolant.

check your engine oil for water and water for oil your head gasket may have blown. failing that the water pump has gone and not pumping the water round. with engine running you should feel the water round if you squeeze the pipe near to the thermostat.

I have a 94 ford explorer limited and it just started over heating today. i have already replaced the upper radiatior hose and heater control valve. i am not sure what would be causing it to over heat


the first thing I would try is thermostat. They are cheap. When it starts to overheat turn the heater on High. If the temp drops at all then its not the water pump. The heater will not blow hot if water is not circulating.

Honda Civic 2001 lxi cooling system. The water pump does not function at the start of engine. I observed this thru the removal of upper hose of radiator to visually check if the pump discharges water...


It sounds to me like there is an air lock in you're cooling system, and you should never use water in a cooling system unless it is an emergency. Start by draining all the water and replacing it with pre mixed antifreeze, you can use universal prestone anti freeze. Than when the system is topped up with the new anti freeze, approximately two 5 liter jugs run youre vehicle with the rad cap off, top up fluid in the rad, and wait for bubbles and for the fluid level to drop. Fill as needed, it may take awhile for the system to become full, when the bubbles stop wait approximately 5 minutes and if there are no more bubbles or fluid level decrease. you should be good to go.

You may have a blown head gasket. To verify on your own, park on an incline, remove radiator cap, start car and allow to warm up. After thermostat opens and coolant is flowing in radiator, fill the radiator to the neck and watch for bubbles coming up. If combustion gasses come out the radiator, you have a blown head gasket. You may have to race the engine a bit to get them to come out, as it sounds like your mostly leaks under higher engine load. Let me know if this isn't it or if you have more questions.
