It wouldn't happen to be a head gasket. When a head gasket leaks it could be leaking into a cylinder which would cause it to start hard and would also cause it to overheat. I would pull the plugs and at least look at them.

the culprit could be your fuel filter or the vacuum advance on your distributor.i recomend to replace filter and also do a manuel check of vacuum advance on distributor.

Can not use a vehicle without a converter
You have no fuel control, without it
Where did the oxygen sensors go?
Sounds like you have zero vehicle experience
& need a repair shop
Head Gasket a possible
Compression test won't tell you the complete story
Need to do the proper tests for a head gasket, as well
as Cylinder Leak Down Test
