Question about 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Are 700r4 valve bodies replaceable?

I had the Transgo 700-2-3 reprogramming kit installed in the valve body of my 1987 700r4. It will no longer shift into overdrive (as it did before the install) and I was told that it would be easier to get another transmission, rather than chase down the problem. The transmission has not burn up. Of all the money spent and time invested, I do not want to trash the transmission unless I must.

Overdrive is actually the torque converter going into lock up mode. This is controlled by 12+ volts being supplied through a brake switch (which kicks it out when you hit the brakes) which can easily become knocked out of position or adjustment, then through a connector on the outside left of the transmission which could have been damaged or left disconnected, then through a pressure switch in the transmission which only closes when pressure is detected meaning the trans is in 4th gear, then to a solenoid which when energized provides fluid pressure to the converter clutch valve located in the valve body up until about 1997, and after is located inside the trans front pump. The solenoid in the trans often fails, but I would check all fuses, then the brake switch which you should adjust so that it is depressed until the brake pedal is pushed down.

Your answer made me remember things I should have initially added. A 2400-2800 stall lock-up torque converter, and a "corvette" servo were both added to the transmission at the same time during the upgrade. I also have an B&M Megashifter 80692 installed. Would the neutral safety switch be related to this problem? Also, would the brake switch be in connection to the shifter? The shifter is not fully assembled, just mounted and mechanically hooked up for shifting. The brake light stays on now. Would ANY of this play a roll?

Brake light on is an indication that the brake light switch is out of position or misadjusted. The lockup release switch may be made as a part of the brake switch, or at least will be right beside it. If it is not working, the lockup will not work.

If ur familiar with 700R4. The transmission is still good. What the problem is and they all do it. Remove the front pump and replace the front clutches and it will go into O/D

I have fixed many 700r4 with this problem. I can tell you when it starts to go in to o/d it will seem like it's going in to neutral.

To replace the front pump, must I disassemble the whole transmission? Is this more of a job for a transmission shop?

  • Dennis Hanks Sr. Dec 23, 2014

Do not replace the pump. It's still good.Take trans.pan bolts out n also the front pump bolts.Make a mark on the pump n trans so u put it back the same way. u will c a big cap when u take the pan off. take it off n look n there n point the srew driver or a long punch n knock the pump out .then u will c the clutches.Replace those n a new seal n O ring.U should be able to get the parts from auto zone. u do not have to buy the whole kit. Good Luck n take ur time.must do this n a clean area.always use clean rags

What is a sonnex kit and how mush does it cost and do you have to pull the trans to install?

A sonnex kit is a reprogram for the transmissions valve body . no just remove pan and valve body to install if the the 2-4 servo needs to come out for different springs then it can be done in the car but a tight work area. Transtar industries carries sonnex kits.

Transmission will not shift automatly, can shift it manually I changed the filter and fluid. i would like to know if it might be the range sensor or the transmission solenoid

most likely it is a stuck shuttle valve in the valve body, remove the valve body and make sure all valve move easily in their bores, the best way to cure this is to install a new valve body with a shift kit.

I'm having a issue with my transmission on a 2004 venture, when it gets up to normal operating temperatures. Whwn the van shift from first to second and then from second to third, there tends be a clunk or...

The problem is probably a bad Electronic Pressure Solenoid (EPC). Have the computer scanned at a dealership or a transmission shop to verify this. The code will probably be a P1811. The P1811 code sets because the transmission takes longer than 0.65 seconds to shift, then the computer commands maximum line pressure to make the car shift as fast as possible to avoid burning the clutches. Replacing the EPC is an expensive job, however, you can install a shift kit to speed up the shifting, and probably fix the problem. The shift kit is available from a company called TransGo. If you go to www.transgo.com you can look up a distributor in your area. The kit you will need is the SK®4T65E. Installing the shift kit is pretty easy for the 'shade tree mechanic'; if you can change your own transmission fluid, you can most likely install this kit yourself.

I have a frod f-350 pickup. It shifts from first to second with no problem. From second to third it has a hard time shifting and when it does it shifts very hard.

Valves likely hanging up in valve body. There is a kit made by TransGo that is works wonderful for the shifting/calibration issues - as long as there isn't something else failing within.
