The bolts are in the starter, underneath. My info says to remove negative battery cable. Safely raise and support the front of the vehicle. Never trust a jack to hold vehicle, at the least, use multiple heavy duty jack-stands on pavement. there are safety issues working under a vehicle. Safety is your responsibility.

There may be a splash guard that you need to remove. Remove electrical connections from starter, remove starter bolts, drop starter.

Where is the starter located on 1999 monte carlo 3.8l automatic

I'm going to attempt to be a bit more specific.

The starter should be located at the front of the engine, mounted down low by the oil pan.

Here is a video that should show what's involved. Don't let the title throw you off as it also applies to your vehicle according to the description.

Hope this helps.

1997 monte carlo new battery and alternator but will only start when jumped

starter might be internally shorted or binding up causing the starter to require more amperage to turn. have a mechanic perform a starter draw test on it or take it off and have it tested. if you are going to have it tested take it to a good alternator/starter repair shop. autozone and oreillys cant simulate engine load and if its binding because of a bad bearing on the armature shaft, with out engine load it will test good

1997 monte carlo 3.1 No crank problem. Battery good, all lights work. Starter cranks if jumped between solenoid terminal and hot starter terminal. Have tried both keys.

Ifit turns the engine so the bendex drive gear engages with the fly wheel then the starter is bad its nit switching inside it and you just by passed the bad switch. If the bendex drive dosn't engage then the solinoid is the cause of the problem

Underneath, between radiator and engine. Bolted to engine, might have exhaust pipe running near if not over starter.

Engine removal 1997 monte carlo

For the torque converter bolts you will need to remove the starter and then you can spin the engine over till you see the bolts there will be three of them If I recall right they are 18mm headed bolts.
When I remove an engine I like to leave the top two bolts in the transmission to engine bellhousing. Then when you get the jack right under the transmisson and get your engine hoist all hooked up and ready to pull it they are right there and easy to unbolt rather than sliding under the car to try and get the last bolt out. There is no specific way to remove them, I just find that alot easier!
