You only need a few. You need a wrench or socket that fits the oil pan drain plug. Car makers have used all sizes of drain plugs, don't know Saturn's, anywhere from 13 millimeter to 19 millimeter size wrench or socket. One of them will fit yours. So one wrench (when you find the right one) and you will need a drain pan to catch the oil. Next you will need an oil filter wrench or tool. There are several types and sizes-when you buy the new oil filter you can get the filter remover that fits your filter . A parts person should be able to help you select the right one. Also buy a small funnel to pour new oil into the engine .And don't forget to have a few rags handy to clean up spills and wipe off areas. That's about all that is normally required.

Bearings are located at each "big end" of every connecting rod (the rod that connects each piston to the crankshaft and at each crank support (part of the engine block) To measure wear on a bearing you need something called "plastigage" which is placed betweenthe bearing surface and the crank, the cap re-torqued then removed. You then measure the spread of the gauge material with a micrometer. If you remove any bearing and see brass backing instead of bearing material, you don't need to measure it...It is gone. You need to check all the bearings in this manner. If any Main bearings are worn, the engine needs to be removed as that is the ONLY correct way to replace them without having another immediate failure. I'm not saying this to be insulting, but if you need to ask where the bearings are, it is likely you should not be doing this work. Though it appears to be a "take out, put in" operation, it takes experience and skill not only to do the job correctly but to recognize things inside that can bite you in the **** if they are not taken care of. One other item....If you don't understand this answer do not rate it. I only am a beginner (40 years in repair, many spent building 7,000 hp race engines) so, I'm not very sure about the answer (if you believe that, monkeys will fly tomorrow!!!) We do this free and really don't need a poor rating for a perfectly good answer!!! Good luck!
After you have the hood open, locate your oil cap and remove it to
release any pressure in the system. For the next part you will need a
flat head screw driver, a socket wrench and set of sockets, and an oil
pan or something to store the used oil in.
Begin by sliding
the oil pan underneath the truck and back. Because your GMC Jimmy has
higher suspension there should be no need to lift the suv up on jack
stands. Lay on your back and slide underneath until you are about
midway underneath. Locate the oil pan, and the oil pan plug. The plug
will look like a small bolt head. Position the oil pan underneath the
plug. Next, taking your socket wrench and, using the appropriately
sized socket, loosen the oil plug and remove it. At this point you may
get a little dirty because the old, used oil will come out.
the old oil has finished draining put the plug back in, but only
tighten it down hand tight. Next move forward under the vehicle until
you are just below the front bumper. There will be a small black door
at a horizontal angle with a screw holding it in place. Taking your
flat head screw driver twist it until the door swings open.
you have access to the old oil filter. To remove the oil filter reach
in and twist it counter clock wise. If the oil filter will not move
with your hand try using a piece of light grit sandpaper for extra
grip. You may need to purchase an oil filter wrench.
removing the old oil filter take the new filter from its box, ensure
that the black rubber gasket is in place at the end of it and rub a
small amount of the old oil around the gasket. This helps to ensure
that the new gasket will seal to the car. After tightening down the oil
filter close the door.
Jack up pass side.Put cardboard, BIG piece under engine just in case. Using a pan to drain the oil in put under oil pan drain plug. Remove drain plug with socket wrench. Let drain 5 min. Check the gasket on the drain plug, if bad replace with new gasket .99 cents to replace gasket only on plug. Put plug back in DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the plug. Slide drain pan with drained oil to the front to remove oil filter. Using a filter wrench remove oil filter. Let drain. When installing new filter put a little new engine oil on the rubber gasket on the filter with your finger. Screw filter back on tighten with filter wrench. Fill van with oil from front valve cover opening.
