I left a comment on Jeff's answer. Unless you are a mechanic, you need to have it checked out by an expert on Ford Trucks. It could be as simple as a software upgrade via OBDII port, and the first place to start is there. Is it making grinding noises when you try to engage the system? Have you made sure to replace all 4 tires at the same time? Different tire sizes or bald tires on one axle and new tires on the other can cause disastrous friction in the system, as the tires would be turning at different speeds. Also, hubs locked frozen is common, and I once released my Grand Cherokee by pulling on the lever while suddenly taking off in reverse, releasing gears stuck in drive. I do NOT recommend going 30mph in reverse but just a little kick of the throttle while pushing the lever into 4x4 mode may fix it. I am not an expert, but I grew up on a farm and know how tricky heavy duty gears are in tractors and my first car....a 1978 Plymouth Trail Duster 440 V8 and manual hubs and a heavy duty transfer case. Sometimes it would take a half hour to get the 4X4 system unstuck after months of disuse. Same with my 2000 F-150, and my 2003 Grand Cher Laredo Select Track II. Good luck, and I hope it works out with this general common sense logic based on experience. Maybe a a combination of Jeff's technical answer and my layman's experience will combine to help. Jeff is certainly right on and I would say he is an expert, but if the 4x4 worked last winter and now is stuck this year, it is proba lay rusty transfer case gears.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Your 4x4 system is over 11 years old, and first thing is hooking up and OBD2 port scanner and checck any active codes, after that, I totally agree with Jeff
