This only removes the power to that axle it will not correct the noise

check the front drive shaft spline or "U" joint at the transfer case
splines on this shaft wear more quickly that the rear drive line
as the operation angles for the front diff are more acute that the rear shaft

Why rear wheels are locked up but front are not


the first place to check is then rear drive line "U" joints as fail on a regular basis and can be not allowing the shaft to turn properly
T check for diff , jack up one side and engage a gear
if the wheel spins then the diff is turning but if it makes a bad noise (all will rumble a t a low level in this position) the diff will be faulty
It is possible that a joint flange has come loose and the bolts are jamming on the back of the transfer case housing

What would make a trans squeal while driving down the road?


You don't say, Front or rear wheel drive. First check oil level, On rear wheel drive check the thrower plate on the tail shaft at the diff end is not bent and rubbing on the seal, A dry oil seal can make this noise.so can the U/Joints. on front wheel drive , check the cv joints , dry oil seals , the drive shaft inner cv joints have a thrower plate that may be bent. worn or binding brakes can make this noise also.

How to remove rear diff from ve commodore?


loosen rear wheels, jack up rear so wheels are free, fit safety stands , drain oil, remove wheels, remove 4 bolts holding axle bearings. remove both axles, remove bolts from tail shaft at diff pinion flange , leave tail shaft in transmission housing or oil will leak out, remove bolts from diff housing, the diff center can now be removed.

What is the differential and does it need flushed?


the differential is that item that allows one shaft to move separate to the other connected shaft. That is to say the left wheel to go faster /slower than the right wheel as in going around a corner or moving on uneven ground. There is one in front wheel drive vehicles , in rear wheel drive vehicles , and if you have an All wheel drive vehicle there is another between the front wheels and the rear wheels in the transfer case /gearbox. Unless you have metal or water contamination in the unit or have used the wrong oil in the unit it is not necessary to flush out the diff. Changing the oil as you would the sump oil is sufficient ( drain out and refill).A word of caution here. There is a special oil used in limited slip differentials so make sure that you replace the drained oil with the correct oil for the diff as damage will result if you don't.

diff noises are a harmonic whine on drive (Acceleration or drive speed )or a growl on overdrive ( slowing down or coasting)
if you have a drive shaft to the rear diff it is possible that the rear shaft has not been assembled correctly and the out of phase of the joints will give indications that you describe
Take it to a drive shaft specialist shop for a diagnosis

best bet is junkyard replacement. worst case. remove tc and get a longer driveshaft to the rear end

there is a central diff(called a TORSEN diff)and yes it has splines on the output shaft.NOW this IS a front wheel drive car that goes into 4wd when traction to the front is compromised(slipping)they are not allowed to call it "quattro"or 4wd as its NOT.jack up the rear and block the front wheels,start the engine and put it into gear,the rear wheels should turn if the central diff is operating correctly.if not the best solution is to get a diagnostic done at a subaru dealer(you can then decide if you are capable of fixing it yourself or are willing for them to fix it)It is not as simple a system as some people would make out as you have electronics to control the front/rear traction.and the diagnostic computer they use is invaluable.AND EXPENSIVE.

Subaru impreza rear diff noise??


jack car up and remove the rear shaft retainer plate, 6 14mm bolts. use a 12mm spanner to remove the 4 nuts and bolts on rear of tailshaft and front, take the shaft out completely, check for play in the front yolk of the diff, there should be very minimal play, if there is alot of play or worse your getting rotations then the front bearing is gone and will need replacing, you can get the whole diff centre fro about $260 from sunbury parts in qld. cheaper and quicker option, make sure the gear rations are the same.

Loud poping in front of the Bravada(1993) when making a slow / tight turn. This car has all wheel drive.


they have had some problems with the drive shaft from the transmission to front diff i usually remove it on a flat surface and road test if noise is gone repair or replace shaft
