Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 2005 equinox.when driving and approchaing a red light ,as the car slows the idle drops to the point where it stalls.what could be the problem.

I put the car in neutral and the idle seems to stay at about 900 to 1000 rpms which seems to help prevent stalling.

Hi Mandy, Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan. The problem may be a damaged vacuum hose or leakage from the ducting between the intake and the throttle body. A scan should help pin point the problem. Regards John

Car running rough at random when accelerating and also idle drops suddenly when slowing down and often completely stalls out when I stop. Smells strongly of gasoline when it stalls/almost stalls but I

This could be a lot of things. one of the tests that you need to run is shift it into nuetral when you are stopping and see if it still drops RPM and wants to stall. This will eliminate or conclude that it is a transmission issue. If it is still doing this then it could be a vacuum leak or fuel delivery issue.

Check the idle air bypass valve see if dirty, cleanable unit. you check the working of valve by powering the unit with 12 volts. check map sensor too.

1997 Camry - Possible Fuel Pump??

this is a dirty idle air control valve, clean it using the following procedure.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
