There is an electronic switch behind the lock which converts mechanical rotation of key in electrical signals. That switch seems to be faulty.
We got a VW Polo cars which has defect in that part so the Customer was able to Turn ON the ignition but not start the car. We have a video made for its repair. You may find good electrician who can repair that part else you can go for replacement part.

If Alternator is working properly and you disconnect Battery the Car will keep running. It sounds more like an Ignition Switch not turning off power on that Leg of Switch when turned to off Position. Or possibly a short in system supplying

Ford ues one , inertia fuel shut off switch > It's it case the vehicle is in a accident > It kills B+ voltage to the fuel pump > GM vehicles don't need one , it's the way the fuel pump is powered . The PCM/ECM - engine computer supplys B+ voltage to energize the fuel pump relay .

Where can l find the kill switch or the fuel cut off switch?

Hi Diessire:
This will depend on the vehicle and type of fuel.
It can get interesting when dealing with diesel as there is no spark for ignition so to shut the engine off, the fuel has to be shut off.
This is where a solenoid is activated when the switch (key) is turned off, and the fuel supply is stopped.

06 gmc envoy starts but shuts off shortly after and wont start again for a min or two

It looks like the OBD 2 connector gets power from the cig lighter fuse in the box near the battery.
I assume the check engine light comes on when you turn the key switch on then goes off when the engine starts.
I would check the fuel pump fuse and relay for power - the pump relay gets power from a PCM fuse which could also affect the computer.
You know now that the alternator has no effect on starting, and the security system kills the starter in addition to the injectors. It can not kill the engine after it starts in most cases.

DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK WITH KEY OR REMOTE

didnt specify vehicle --generic answer --if key doesnt work on door then you have two problems --if fob doesnt open drivers door and other doors try changing fob battery -if no go either need locksmith or AAA service to slim door ---also if key doesnt open door possible lock linkage damage or disconnect --rare that both would happen and lastly make sure using proper fob and key

My husband drilled a hole in the key because the top hook was broke now the car turns on and then shuts off - is this fixable?

You had a key that had a security chip in it. When he drilled the key he destroyed the security chip which is causing the vehicle Anti-Theft system to activate and kill the engine. You will have to replace the key.

We own a 2000 GMC Jimmy, and it won't start. It got repoed in January or Feb and we got it back with a GPS locater on it. Ever since the car lot put the locater on it, it kind of run weird after that. Now...

If the vehicle doesnt turn over make sure the battery is fully charged. If charged and still doesnt turn,(if the vehicle has a security system) check and make sure the starter kill feature is disabled (check vallet switch). If it cranks and doesnt start to check the fuel pump you can have someone turn the key to the on position while you put your ear close to the fuel tank to see if you can hear the pump (you should hear a buzzing sound for 5seconds after the key is turned to the on position). This is a tuff call. You need to find out what the lot did when they put the GPS on the vehicle

All newer vehicles have a safety battery shut off. Youll need to turn your key back to accessory. say your listening to your radio with the keys out, it will shut off after 10 mins so it dont drain your battery. dont worry about it killing your battery charging a phone...ect.
