P0128 OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description

Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)
What does that mean?

This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125

In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.

You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination.

A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

Possible Solutions

Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:

  • Verify coolant strength & level
  • Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat

2008 impala says engine hot ac off I recharged the ac correctly and it still says engine hot blah blah blah but ac only works every once in awhile

Why are you messing with the AC? It's telling you the engine is overheating and that's why it shut the AC down.

The "engine hot/ac turned off light" came on and

after replacing a thermostat you need to wait till the thermostat opens and re add more coolant till its full. if the lite stays on the sensor is most likely bad

2005 Chevy Impala. Engine fan only kicks on when engine is very hot {220-230 degrees). Is this a fan sensor problem?

Believe it or not,230 is about where GM puts it. Claim the engine pollutes less at hot temps.
Fans should run with the AC on tho, mine runs cooler with the AC on .

Chevy impala engine hot a/c off light just came on

If the engine is not really overheating and not low of coolant.

Replace the temperature sensor.

The Failed temperature sensor has a zero reading for the Control board, without this reading the car starts running in limp home mode or Default and assumes the engine is running hot, first thing to go is your comfort... The AC.
In addition starts the engine cooling fan to running full time.

Hope this tip helps.
