If this is an engine backfire issue try these. You do not really say. There are many things that can cause backfires on Durango. It could be a throttle position sensor or a leak in the throttle body gasket. It is possible that the fuel pump has gone bad or fuel injectors are plugged. May be as simple as a bad distributor cap and rotor causing a cross fire. I would start there. If not, get the codes off the ECM and see if that leads to the problem(s) Really do not have enough information. I hope this helps!

Was this an isolated incident or a recurring problem? A universal joint comes to mind or maybe a motor mount.

SOURCE: loud clicking noise which the clicking noise getss faster as i accelerate

From what you are describing it sounds like it must be a valve lifter sticking. Try putting a cup of transmission oil in your crankcase, or pick up some suitable additive from your local parts store. I wish i could hear it and give you a better idea. Maybe let them listen to it at the parts store, and they can determine if it's a lifter or not. Let me know how you make out.

It does it more uphill because the engine needs more fuel. Its starving. How about replacing the fuel filter.

Yes i have a 2000 dodge durango going up hills it jerks and sputters and you can hold your brakes and mash the gas and it sputters through the carberator

Just a guess here, but your fuel filter may be partially clogged and may need replaced. Also, your fuel pump may be going out.

It jerks alot while driving. It jerked so hard that it knocked it out of cruise controll.Could it be a fuel filter?

Yes. Check your fuel system completely.
The fuel filter is dirty or the fuel pump is loosing power.
