Overdrive is a function of the torque converter. When you put the transmission in the vehicle you should have change the seals and rings on the shaft. The transmission fluid travels through that. Also check the linkages and the connections.

Are you getting the check engine light? If so the electronics may have gone out. You may not need a rebuild but you won't know till you pull the oil pan on the transmission and inspect the contents. You may also have lost the neutral safety switch. It is mounted on the drivers side of the transmission. Check those out first and let me know what codes you get.
For Ponchoboy; the clunking and hissing you hear are teminal root causes. Drop the oil pan and if it has a lot of filings and metal it is time for a rebuild.

Check the transmission fluid and see it's condition. Make sure it's at the proper level, the whining noise sounds like the transmission has low line pressure which would be a bad transmission pump. The "klunk" was the line pressure being high and low right now could ba a faulty transmission pressure line servo. Newer automatic transmission designs often use many pressure control solenoids, and sometimes allow the shift solenoids themselves to provide precise pressure control during shifts by romping the solenoid on and off. The shift pressure affects the shift quality (too high a pressure will result in rough shifting; too low a pressure will cause the clutches to overheat) and shift speed. Check the fuse box at the end of the dash on the driver's side and look for the transmission fuse and make sure it's not bad. You can also try resetting the ECM by placing the ignition to the run position and pulling the ECM (BATT) fuse out for 30 seconds and placing it back in and starting the jimmy. It may stall but let it and don't touch anything. Just restart the engine and everything should be like the way it came off the assembly line and hope the transmission come back to life till you can get it to a transmission shop for a proper scan. you may be confusing the torque converter clutch engagement with o.d. this trans has a problem with the T.C.C. regulator valve wearing out the valve body bore. this will cause the converter clutch to engage only sometimes or not at all. this will set a P1870 code in the control module. when this code is stored in the controller, ( check engine light may or may not be on), it increases the pressure in the transmission causing the 1-2 shift to be harsh. ask a local tranny shop to scan the vehicle ( most will do this for free) if this is the problem they can either fix your valve body (sonnax parts) or replace it with an upgraded valve body. hope this helps

The gear shift lever indicators tell you what gear you have an automatic transmission
in on your vehicle. The shift solenoid tells the transmission when to
shift gears and what gear to shift into. Newer model automatic
transmissions have electronic shift solenoids that are activated and
change gears based on the speed the vehicle is traveling.
Troubleshooting either one of these transmission components is
relatively easy if you know a little about automobile mechanics. With
the right tools, you can determine whether the transmission shift
solenoid is having a problem. Gear shift indicator problems can be
determined simply by moving the gears into their designated position.
