The cat convertor is contaminated with fuel. If the light will not go off (its always on) you have two choices: 1. install new cat(s) or Run premium fuel until light goes out. However before doing either you must first ensure the car's: air filter is new, the spark plugs are new and you put fuel injector cleaner in every tank of fuel. and you might want to replace the O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe. (fuel injectors foul up and cause spilling of fuel instead of spraying atomized fuel and if the spark plugs are fouled they ill not do complete burn of the fuel and therefore cause fuel to get into the cat converter. The O2 sensor can also cause the computer to adjust the timing to fire the plugs and cause similar issues)

Check engine light on the check engine light code isP0420

420 is catalyst below efficiency. On rare occasions it can be the post O2 sensor/s. Sorry to say, it is the catalytic converters. They are not cheap on your car.

05' Dodge RAM 1500 code p0420. I've been changing oxygen sensors since u bought it 2 years ago, thought the problem was solved but yet again check engine light came on, could there be an other problem??

Hello: Code P0 420 indicates the catalytic converter is operating below calibrated efficiency (below 60%) replacing the oxygen sensors will not correct the condition. The converter needs to be replaced and the code cleared.

Code 430 and 420

Wow!, I answered this about 30 minutes ago, but somehow my answer didn't post.

Fault code 420 is Catalyst system efficiency below threshold, ( bank 1 )
Fault code 430 is the same as above but, ( bank 2 )

Fault codes do not determine what part is bad, they just reduce the field for troubleshooting.
This is what I would have checked;
1. Oxygen sensor, upstream ( meaning before the catalytic converter )
2. Oxygen sensor, downstream ( meaning after the catalytic converter )
3. MAF, ( mass air flow ), sensor
4. Idle air control sensor.

Your problem will be with the emission system.

I hope this helps you.

Check engine light is on in my 2005 altima 2.5 got it scanned and the codes i got were P0335 /P0725/P0420 also car keeps stalling

po335 and 725 bad crank sensor and this is also reason for stalling.po 420 catalyst has lost efficiency....needs new catalytic converter ...covered under 8year 80000 mile emmisions warranty.

I have a code that keeps coming up! its "P0420"....... any idea what that is!

Hello: Code 420 is reduced catalytic converter efficiency. The only way to repair is to replace the converter but before you do you need to check the engine and make sure the engine is not running rich or it will ruin the new converter

I have a 1996 chrysler town and country LXI. My check engine light came on about 2 weeks. I took the van into brake masters so they could perform a free check engine light evaluation. the guy at brake...

P0420 Catalyst efficiency below range.

P0731 A/T Additional Gear Ratio Error In First Gear

Your catalytic converter could be clogged up or just bad. Or, you could have a leak before the catalyst.
The other code suggest you have an internal transmission problem that is mechanical and cannot be fixed without taking the transmission apart.

I have a 2007 Pacifica and the check engine light came on and a code PO 420. What does that mean?

P0420 is catalytic converter efficiency code. This code usually requires the PCM being reprogrammed or the catalytic converter replaced, sometimes both. How many miles are your pacifica? Emissions control equipment should be covered by an 80k / 8 year warranty.

Showing PO420 and PO304 code

MAP sensor, Maybe, but doubt it.

When the misfire monitor detects a misfire, it will trigger the check engine light with the specific cylinder number as the last digit in the P030X code. For instance cylinder 1 misfire is P0301, cylinder 2 is P0302 etc. In this case we are left with a P0304 in the computer memory. Which is cylinder 4.
Possible Causes:

Fuel injectors, related wiring, sensors and computer issues
Running out of gas, or poor fuel quality
Evaporative emissions system (EVAP) concerns: fuel vapors leaking into engine
Incorrect Fuel Pressure
EGR system concerns: leaking EGR valve or restricted ports
Base engine concerns: low compression, valve train problems and timing issues
Ignition system concerns including, but not limited to:
Faulty spark plugs
Faulty coil or related wiring
Ignition module or related wiring issues
Ignition related sensor faults or wiring issues
This maybe causing PO420 code to go off.
Which is:
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

There is one O2 (oxygen) sensor in front of the catalytic converter (called upstream), and one behind it (downstream). When the engine is warmed up and running normally the upstream oxygen sensor reading fluctuates and the downstream one is fairly steady. In the case where both readings are fairly steady, a P0420 check engine light code is set.

Possible Causes:

Oxygen (O2) sensor not working correctly
Damaged or leaking exhuast (pipe, manifold, catalytic converter)
Damaged catalytic converter
