Check your thermostat, could be locked/closed and won't let water circulate through the engine block. Also make sure your radiator fan is working, after you start you car and the engine reaches the proper temp, your radiator fan should kick in to cool the engine.

How do I start a ford escape after running out of gas ?

Make sure you put gas in the fuel tank.

Turn the key to the ON position (Do not start it) you should hear the fuel pump running, and the car act like it normally would just without the engine running... leave it like this for about 1-2 minutes to prime the system.

and turn the key like you would normally start it. It might not start the first time.

You might have a dead cell in the battery. Take the battery out and have it tested. Most automotive parts stores have testers and will test for free.

2002 escape check engine light came on and Auto Zone said I had a large fuel emissions leak. What does this mean and would this cause the escape to not want to start in the mornings without pressing on the...

The most common fault that Escape has with emission control is the EGR pressure sensor failing. The code for this is p0704 (from memory) and if this the the code you have then i recommend replacing that part first. This would not effect the cold start performance however, I would suggest that this is a separate issue. Recommend having the throttle body cleaned and the idle reset to help cold start issue.
Hope this helps, Mark.
