Check for a shorted switch. Be sure it is not a variable speed wiper with infinent settings.

My wipers work well but only when the wiper lever is held down. The dial action that controls the speed does nothing when turned

What happens when you pull the lever up?
Some wiper systems have four or five settings: Down for a quick clean; off when lever is left alone; intermittent when pulled up one notch; steady when pulled up two notches; and sometimes faster when pulled up three notches.

Where is windshield wiper controller

normally on the wiper stalk under the steering wheel opposite side to the indicators. Up for burst operation. down for intermittent , down again slow speed and down again for faster. Some units twist the knob for different speed intermittent operation. This unit controls the wiper operation

Windshield wipers work but interminent settings don't

most likely cause is the wiper switch has gone bad and unable to 'time' the intermittent speeds.the intermittent speeds work on a resistor type system where low and high speeds add direct voltage.

1985 gmc k1500 wipers only move at 1 slow spped, interminttent doesnt work at all. How fast is fast and why is fast not working?

Slow is the same speed as 'mist'. Mist is when you twist the control arm backwards to induce a single swipe. If you hold it, you will run the wipers in low speed. Fast is faster than that. Probably by 30% or more.

Turn the wipers on high speed. Wiggle the connector at the wiper motor. If the wipers run sporadically as you wiggle the connector, you either have a bad connector or a bad circuit board on the wiper motor.
