97 GMC 4wheel drive only locks in on right side.

97 GMC K1500 - When I push the 4x4 button, only the passenger (right) side goes in. Drivers side tries to lock in but only clicks and surges. I replaced the drivers (left) axle and hub/bearing assem. - Not sure what to try next - Just hit 200,000 miles on it. Replaced the engine at about 190,000 with a GM Crate 5.7 350 - Thanks in advance

RECHECK YOUR WORK. YOU MAY NOT HAVE ASSY INSTALLED CORRECTLY OR YOU MAY HAVE DAMAGED THE SENSOR ARE YOU SURE AXLE IS PLUGGED IN ALL THE WAY?

Thank you - I will double check the sensor. The axle should be in all the way. I torqued it to proper specs, but I can double check that also.

RAUL, I SAW IN ANOTHER COMMENT THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS PRE-EXISTING CHECK THE LOCKING ASSY ON THE HUB THE BRASS OR PLASTIC PIECES OFTEN FAIL

  • Raul Dec 11, 2014

I will check that - thank you

When I changed the hub/bearing and half shaft, that didn't get changed with it? Or are you thinking the new one failed in the bearing/hub?

  • BILL HAND Dec 11, 2014

NO,CHECK THE UNIT THAT GOES ON AFTER THE BEARING

  • Raul Dec 12, 2014

I can't think of anything that goes on after the bearing. (from memory so might be off a bit) - remove tire, remove caliper, remove half shaft nut, remove 3 bolts through holes, unplug sensor .......... if I remember right

  • BILL HAND Dec 13, 2014

THERE IS A ACTUATOR ON THE SIDE OF THE DIFFERENTIAL THAT LOCKS 4 X 4 IN OR OUT .THIS MAY BE THE ISSUE. START THERE, IF THIS DOES NOT CURE THE PROBLEM THEN IT IS INTERNAL. HOPES THIS HELPS. LET ME KNOE

Did this problem exist prior to replacing the front left axle? If not, its possible the sensor (if applicable) isn't properly secure, got dirty, or is faulty - or, you have a mechanical issue within the hub itself. I suggest taking the hub back apart (without taking the axle out) and inspecting the unit for possible damage you may not have seen before, or that may have happened during installation without you knowing.

Yes, it did exist before hand. The boot was ripped, so I figured that was the issue and replaced it. - I will pull the hub out and recheck, and check/clean the sensor connection.

When it is in 4x4 check and see if you can turn the front drive shaft. If you can the problem is in the front end. If you can't the problem is in the trasfercase.

O2 sensors in a 97 gmc 1500 with 5.7 liter

bank 1 is the drivers side bank, so b1s1 would be the drivers side closest to the engine. if the truck is equipped with several 02 sensors then bank 2 or b2s1 would be passenger side closest to the engine. those are called upstream o2 sensors and the others downstream b1s2 and b1s2 b= bank 1= drivers side s=sensor 2=downstream. hope this helps.

97 JIMMY,PUSH 4X4 BUTTON,NOTHING HAPPENS

Hi,
When you switch it from 2H to 4H you can push the switch at any speed but if you switch to 4L the car must be stop and the shifter is in neutral position.
Anyway here is my suggestion.... I would check the switch it self 1st for proper contact, also check the owners manual if there is a fuse for 4X4.
The worse scenario is the 4X4 computer is dead and if you have problem with transfer case you would notice a whining noise.
