SOURCE: ford escape Rear Suspension With Coil Springs - out of joint?

It is a 4x4. The "yellow" looking item in between/inside the black spring coil seems to be out of its joint. When I compare the left vs the right, the left side is sitting up high, while the right side appears to be settled into place.

SOURCE: cv joint replacement 1998 isuzu trooper 4x4

This is a simple job that is why it is not very detailed in your book. Nothing special. Do one side at a time so you have a reference to how to reassemble it. Remove your tire , brake calipers be sure not to stress the rubber brake lines or open the brake lines to air. Remove both upper and lower ball joints. When taking out the ball joints remove the cotter pin and bolt and beat the **** out of the joint for it to release. Then the C/V axles will come right out with a bit out encouragement. You will need a few tools wrenches pry bar hammer. I would buy a Chilton's or a Haynes repair manual for torque specs for reassembly. Good luck and take your time. And unless the axles are making noise you can just replace the rubber boots. Which is alot cheaper.

SOURCE: 2000 Ford Taurus. How do I change a ball joint?

Lower Ball Joint Inspection

  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Prior to carrying out any inspection of the ball joints inspect the wheel bearing.
  4. Have an assistant pull inward and outward on the top and the bottom tire. Mount a suitable dial indicator and measure the movement between the ball joint and the lower arm. If the movement is at or exceeds 0.03 in. (0.75 mm) install a new ball joint.

How would i know if my cv joint is going bad on my 94 ford ranger 2 wheel drive

A two wheel drive ranger does not have any c.v. Joints. It does have u joints in the rear drive shaft. Worn out u joints can cause vibrations at highway speeds, squeezing noises at low speeds, and in some cases a clunking noise when the transmiissin is placed in park or drive. You can check them by pulling the drive shaft and ratting the joint. If it is stiff or loose than they are likely bad. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Ford focus - clunk in driveline in reverse when wheels are lock left or even right

Drive Axle CV Joint is bad
You will need to replace the complete drive axle,on one side of the vehicle, and inspect the other side as well
You will be getting a rebuilt part.
I believe, when you turn the wheels and back up ,it is the outer joint.

2004 ford ranger

Its most likely either or, if its a high pitched sound its probably the wheel bearing. If its a growling/grinding/clunking sound its probably the CV Joint. However, your problem more than likely lies in either/both.
