Changed my rear discs and pads on my f r puma.I wound the piston back. All bolted up. the wheel wont turn even though the handbrake is off. do I need to slacken the handbrake cable off more


I would go back the the wheel not turning. If the E brake cable is on the back side and out side the brake, use a hammer and knock back the arm, the cable could be seized up and not releasing. If the cable goes inside the brake, then either replace the cable or cut it close to the brake. I recommend you replace both sides.

Change handbrake cable


Hi Steve, The problem sounds as if it is the park brake adjustment or wear on the cable, (which may be binding inside the outer cover. This can be caused by a frayed inner cable and the ends catching). Try adjustment first and then only replacement of the cable. I have not carried out the job on a vehicle of this type, but replacement should be straightforward and logical. I'm fairly sure it will mean the removal of the center consul and disassembly of the brake activation levers on the parking brake shoes. Take some photographs or make some sketches before disassembling so you know how to re assemble. Regards John

Handbrake stuck on


The easiest way is to just cut the handbrake cable (the one that goes to the lever, hidden by the exhaust), but you will have to replace it afterwards.

I but a new handbrake cable on my 99 transit and shoes and the handbrake pulls up to far


Ensure parking brake is fully released.
Place transmission in Neutral.
Raise and support vehicle.
Tighten cable equalizer adjusting nut until rear wheel brake drag is felt when spinning rear wheel by hand.
Loosen cable equalizer adjusting nut until rear brakes are fully released.
Spin rear wheels and ensure there is no brake drag. Lower vehicle, and check parking brake operation

you eather put your foot on the brake and put it in gear and it pops out or you have a handle that releases it under the dash.

this is generally a failure in the hand brake assembly itself.Pulling the center console will reveal the mechanism that locks the brake cable in the unit.You probably will notice its inability to hold in this area which will necessitate replacement .

How to adjust handbrake cable


HANDBRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT

1. Raise the vehicle and release the handbrake.
2. De-adjust the handbrake cable.
  • Remove the locking pin.
  • Slacken the adjuster locknut.
  • Slacken the adjuster until the levers on the callipers have returned to their stops.
3. Paint alignment lines on the lever and caliper
4. Tighten the adjuster until the caliper levers move from the alignment lines.
5. Apply the handbrake to equalise the cable.
6. Tighten the adjuster locknut to a minimum of three clicks and a maximum of six clicks.
7. Fit a new adjuster locking pin.
8. Lower the vehicle.

Sounds like its not cable, but in the hand brake itself. if the release is broke, pulling up on the cable is not going to hold the car and will give way. really sounds like the locking mechanism on the hand brake is broke.
