Question about Cars & Trucks
Nothing yet. There is a rattle under the bonnet when the vehicle moves off but not when the vehicle is static. This rattle has been present for a couple of months but the light has just come on - permanently. Does not appear to be any performance change
This is the check engine light. It's lit because the car has detected a problem. Take the vehicle to your favorite local auto parts store or mechanic and have them scan the trouble codes for you for free. Most shops can print you out a list of numerical codes and the corresponding symptoms detected. Then you will have an idea of the nature and severity of the problem.

Just take it to a mechanic who will put it on a machine that will troubleshoot hour system for free. It could be anything from a lose gas cap to a major problem, but you need to have it checked.
People will do it for FREE!!!!!

go to any Kragen or Autozone and ask for a free trouble code test of your electronic engine controls, there are over 100 different faults that cause this light to come on, some are as simple as a loose gas cap.

To know what it exactly is, you need a code scanner hooked to it.
If there is an autozone near you, go there, tell them the engine light is on and you need the code, takes about 30 seconds. They don't charge, where other places do. Without that code you'll be replacing things you don't need to. There is other sensors in the emission system other than the 02 sensors.

In most cases this problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament, the part is known as a clock spring contact, u will need to properly disarm the airbag and remove the steering wheel to access the part. WARNING: Failure to follow factory Airbag disarming protocol can result in an unexpected Airbag deployment and possible serious personnel injury or death.

I had the same problem on my 2006 Lucerne and it was the engine mount located on the front of the vehicle behind the radiator.

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.
When the yellow Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.
