Why is the dash icon in the shape of a bare engine staying on? The Book says something is wrong with the emission control system but externally its ok?

Nothing yet. There is a rattle under the bonnet when the vehicle moves off but not when the vehicle is static. This rattle has been present for a couple of months but the light has just come on - permanently. Does not appear to be any performance change

This is the check engine light. It's lit because the car has detected a problem. Take the vehicle to your favorite local auto parts store or mechanic and have them scan the trouble codes for you for free. Most shops can print you out a list of numerical codes and the corresponding symptoms detected. Then you will have an idea of the nature and severity of the problem. Just take it to a mechanic who will put it on a machine that will troubleshoot hour system for free. It could be anything from a lose gas cap to a major problem, but you need to have it checked.
People will do it for FREE!!!!!

SOURCE: emission control system light on dash

go to any Kragen or Autozone and ask for a free trouble code test of your electronic engine controls, there are over 100 different faults that cause this light to come on, some are as simple as a loose gas cap.

SOURCE: An emission control sys. indicator has arised (Grand vitara 2005)

To know what it exactly is, you need a code scanner hooked to it.
If there is an autozone near you, go there, tell them the engine light is on and you need the code, takes about 30 seconds. They don't charge, where other places do. Without that code you'll be replacing things you don't need to. There is other sensors in the emission system other than the 02 sensors.

SOURCE: air bag warning light staying on checked fuzes under bonnet ok

In most cases this problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament, the part is known as a clock spring contact, u will need to properly disarm the airbag and remove the steering wheel to access the part. WARNING: Failure to follow factory Airbag disarming protocol can result in an unexpected Airbag deployment and possible serious personnel injury or death.

Check engine light on traction control light on cruise light blinking whats wrong?

When you have a check engine light come on, the traction control light and the cruise lights both come on as well. You need to have the codes checked with a scanner. There most likely isn't a problem with the traction control or cruise systems, the lights turn on because those systems work together with the engine management system or PCM. When there is an engine problem that sets a code that turns on the check engine light, it automatically disables the cruise control and traction control for safety reasons. Because the last thing you want is to have an issue with traction control and/or cruise control if your engine is having an issue, which is why they are disabled. The most common problem that turns on the check engine light is a loose, cross-threaded, or snug but not tight enough fuel filler cap. Subaru recommends three clicks of the cap to be considered tight. Also, any parts store can and will check and/or clear codes for free. I hope this info helps!

Codes351/420/442/455 what do they mean

(M) Check Engine Light ("Malfunction Indicator Light" or "Check Engine") will illuminate during engine operation if this Diagnostic Trouble Code was recorded (depending if required by CARB and/or EPA). MIL is displayed as an engine icon on the instrument cluster.

P0351 (M)
Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit
Peak primary circuit current not achieved with maximum dwell time.

P0420 (M)
Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
Catalyst 1/1 efficiency below required level.

P0442 (M)
Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (medium leak)
A 0.040 leak has been detected in the evaporative system. (A faulty gas cap may cause this code). Also see TSB 25-001-02A. Note: The respective Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures Manual will direct the technician to determine if the vehicle evaporative system has an external system leak. Examples of some external system leaks are: a loose gas cap, a disconnected evaporative system hose, or a loose hose connection. Remember that the evaporative system may also have an internal system leak. This internal leak may be caused by an intermittent or permanently stuck open Duty Cycle Purge (DCP) valve. This leak source is considered to be internal because any escaping emissions enter into the engine system and not directly into the atmosphere, unlike an external leak. An internal leak may cause one of the above DTC?s. Possible causes of a stuck open (intermittent or permanent) DCP valve are: 1. Corrosion due to system moisture or possible water intrusion into the system.

P0455 (M)
Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (large leak)
A large leak has been detected in the evaporative system. See TSB 25-001-02. Also, possible faulty or loose gas cap. Yellow emission light on left upper side of dash stays on does not flash could it be a thermostat

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.

When the yellow Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.

My 2005 honda element check engine lights is showing why? how do i get it off?

NEW VEHICLES ARE EQUIPTED WITH OBD2 SYSTEMS. BASICALY MEANS THERE IS A MAIN COMPUTER CONTROLS AND INSPECTS YOUR ENGINE DRIVETRAIN AND TRANSMISSION WITH SENSORS SWITHES AND ACTUAUTORS ALL THE TIME. RECORDS YOUR INPUTS AND OUTPUTS AND INSPECTS TO MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE RUNS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER SAFE AND KEEP IN EMISSION LEVELS. SO IF SOMETHING STARTS TO GOES WRONG IN THERE LIGHTS THE DASH INDICATOR ON TO LET DRIVER KNOW NEEDS TO SERVICE THAT ENGINE SOON BEFORE SMALL REPAIR BECAME A HUGE REPAIR JOB!!
YOU HAVE TO BRING YOUR VEHICLE CERTIFIED REPAIR SHOP TO READ THE DTC AND MAKE NECESSARY REPAIRS.GOOD LUCK

service engine light normal is an indicator that something is wrong with your emission system, such as an oxygen sensor is going out or a sensor for some of the other emission control systems.

U need to get the electronic engine control system checked for trouble codes, the light is a warning that a fault has occurred in the electronic engine controls, it can be one of over 200 problems in the system turning the light on.

Some of the warning lights stay on.

so all the lights that come on when you first turn the key on stay on? maybe your alternator is not working properly? or not connecting to your dash panel correctly? or maybe the engine management system has a fault in it? more likely to be a dodgy connection to your dash board.
