Most engines have 3 or 4 engine mounts and if one had failed the others will be close behind. Misalignment of the engine to the shifting operation will lock levers or jam cables.

SOURCE: 1999 saturn sl2 transmission wont shift from 1st gear

Your valve body and possibly input shaft nut need to be replaced. The valve body's booster valve is worn down and won't create pressure. Before it went completely out it slammed on the input shaft nut and loosened it.

You need to replace the valve body and retorque the input shaft nut. The transmission is not junk. The above needs to be replaced and change the filter and fluid and do it every 20K miles.

I am worried about the mechanical components of the transmission particularly the torque converter found inside it. The solenoid found in the transmission could also be at fault.

It would be best to check first the simplest fix which may also cause this like the transmission fluid and the filter. Low fluid levels or dirty fluids may cause this issue. If you do change the fluid, include the filter.
If you notice that you are running at a speed different from what the speedometer is saying, it may be the speed sensor in the transmission.
Some shops would let you borrow their scanner for the car's diagnostics, see if you can borrow and check if you do get errors. If there are errors saved in the computer, it would help us diagnose the issue.

There are 4 motor mounts on the engine. You found the top mount. The bottom mount on that side is a dog bone and is right under the crankshaft pulley. The bottom mount is on the other side in about the same place. The drivers side top mount is another dog bone and is under the battery box. For best results, change all four of them at once, and make sure to buy a GM original mount for the top one. The knockoff mounts just aren't as smooth and durable as the real thing. Believe me on this one, the huge difference is well worth the few extra bucks. 25315433-zejmo41uy3tce5x43qikgza0-5-0.jpg

While the hood is open. Rn the engine with a helper operating the gas pedal and e-brake locked. Place the car in D and then R while you are watching the engine from the side. Have the helper step on the gas in each of the gears and watch what happens to the engine. If the engine jumps around,, then you have other mounts that are broken and need replacing.

Where is the thermostat located

you didnt tell me if it was a sl1 or a sl2 this is how you do the sl2
The thermostat is located right on the front of the engine block. Its not a normal thermostat like you see in most vehicles. It is accually the flange that the lower radiator hose slips on to. Drain your engine coolant, remove the clamp on the lower radiator hose going to to the motor. remove the two 10mm bolts from the radiator hose flange to the motor, and the entire assembly will come out. when you purchase a new thermostat, it will come already mounted in a new housing. Replace the gasket, place the new thermostat in the motor, and reinstall the bolts.

tell me if this helps happy holidays

How do you remove the tesion pulley on a 93 saturn sl2 there is no room to get in there and remove it

Raise the right front wheel off the ground and support that corner of the car on a jackstand. Remove the right front wheel. Remove the inner splash shield. The splash shield is held in place with numerous black plastic clips- the center of the clip needs to be pulled part way out, then the entire clip is removed. After the splash shield is remove you get good access to the tensioner and it's mounting bolts.

Mount for a 91 saturn sl2 (dohc)

The real problem you have is that Saturn changed the motor mounts after the first year. So the 91 mounts are different than those for the 92-99 1.9L 4 cylinder which are all the same. You can wait around for them to appear on ebay, except for the front mount which has a small shock built into it which I have never seen for sale on ebay. I assume a dealer could get them for you at a ridiculous price, or check for a somewhat lower but still high price.

Note that most of the folks selling Saturn motor mounts just assume that 91-99 years are the same as the engine was the same but that is just not true. If you look on ebay you can find Saturn parts identifier sheets, S-series, for about a dollar plus 3 dollars shipping, buy one of those those and you will see the difference between the engine mounts and have the exact part numbers.
