Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

On a 98 chevy with a 5.7 vortec that the compressor is making a noise like it is engaging and disengaging and now the motor dies a few seconds after starting. The compressor got unplugged and it stayed kept running. Does this means I need to replace the compressor or what?

SOURCE: 89-98 chevy blazer

It's not worth doing all that conversion, buy the time you spend the time and money to convert the 89 4.3 to work on the 98 blazer, it would be cheaper to install a 98 vortec rebuild. The 89 4.3 have a TBI fuel injection system and the ecm on the 98 will not work and the bad news is that the ecm on the 98 also controls the transmission shift points and the 89 will not, so even if you swap the ecm to have the 89 4.3 engine work. the transmission will not shift. Sorry for the bad news but it would be cheaper to replace the 98 engine with the years of 1996 to 2001. Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: my 1990 chevy lumina will start up for few seconds

Sounds like low fuel pressure. Check your fuel pressure. If you have the 3.1 liter engine and just turn the key to the "on" position you should have around 41 - 47 PSI. When running it should have about 31 - 44 PSI. If you have the 2.5 liter engine you should have 26 - 32 PSI of pressure when running. I hope this helps and good luck.

Air conditioning compressor on my 98 Chevy blazer won't engage. The AC is fully charged. The compressor

the compressor isn't getting the pressure for the clutc to maintain after disengaging the short by removing paperclip. check fuse, relay, and the low/ high pressure lines. if the compreeor doesn't since the correct amount of gas charge and/ or receives it the clutch wont engage not sure about a weak compressor if it may be a contributor. will check back later short on time. I just had mine fixed 2001 chevy 4wd. it was the relay and charge.

On start up there is a noise sounding like something is engaging

Nothing should engage when the engine starts running. The torque converter and transmission pump will spin faster, but not make noise. If they do it wont go away. If the noise is there as the engine start running on it's own. I would guess it is the starter bendix not disengaging after you let off the key. This would entail a new starter. Beings that you have a 98, you might be able to get just the bendix. But you have to take the starter apart to replace it. It's what push the gear forward.

What could cause my 1995 F350 truck AC compressor clutch engages and disengages about every 5 seconds

The intermittent action is a sign that either the low or high pressure switches are working. You need a set of manifold gauges to check both ends of the system out.

Now some systems use an air blend valve under the dash to regulate the A/C temperature with the compressor operating almost constantly. Other systems cut off the a/c compressor to work intermittently to keep the extreme cold from happening and helping to regulate temperatures.

Independent of this is another switch on the a/c tank that prevents freezing. If your black oblong tank is coated frost white, the freeze cutout is going to work. This will make the oblong tank sweat and keep the system from freezing solid.

You may be able to borrow manifold gauges from the tool loaner programs the autoparts stores have. Since the compressor is not running fast enough to cool, the low pressure switch may be cutting power to the compressor clutch while cranking.

98 explorer air conditioning compressor only engages for a few seconds, what do I check first

It sound like it has a low charge but if you know that it is fully charged you may have a bad low pressure switch . Also make sure that the condensor fan is working properly and the system is not building to much pressure.

1998 chevy k1500 idle fast

Sounds like it could be a dirty or faulty idle air control valve.Take it off and clean it with a wire brush and a non-chlronated brake cleaner or replace it with a new one.Make sure you reset the computer after cleaning or replacing the valve.

You will see the motor move when you engage the switch on the dash. The motor is on the bottom of the transfer case behind the transmission. Most likely it's the actuator for the hub lockouts under the battery tray. They wear out after a few years. It could also be the cable that locks the hubs that goes from the actuator to the hub lock in the front differential. Also, check your front differential oil level, if it's not getting oil it won't disengage. Check to make sure the hoses between the transfer case and the actuator are not leaking. If that isn't the case there is a air activated switch ont he top of the transfer case where the air hoses plug into, it has three hoses that go to it. That switch screws in but you have to lower the transmission cross member to get to it. It could also be bad, it costs about twelve dollars. Good luck.

Screeching noise, then a/c stops blowing cold air. Still blows air, just not cold air.

it could be the air conditioning clutch going out. to check turn your car on and idle it with ac on and hood open. at the ac compressor it will have a pulley on it with a clutch that engages when the air conditioning is on. if it engages and disengages it can be the clutch itself has gone bad, the ac clutch will also disengage if there is not enough freon in the ac system, will also engage and disengage if the pressure gets too high in the ac system. Depending on the year of the vehicle it will disengage at full throttle and come back on when you are not at full throttle.
If it is a metallic sounding screech for example take a coke can and drag it across pavement kind of sound it could be a bad compressor or a bad ac clutch. If it is a more rubbery sound for example a car spinning its tires kind of noise it could be a loose belt.

1. Check to make sure all belts are tight under hood
2. start car and look at ac compressor to make sure compressor pulley is turning and that the fan clutch is engaged spinning
